Purpose of the Role
The Marine Operations & Maintenance Assistant supports the Fleet Manager in the day-to-day operational, maintenance, and engineering oversight of the organisation's fleet of vessels. This is a hands-on technical role, combining practical marine experience with strong problem-solving and coordination skills to ensure the fleet is maintained to the highest operational and safety standards.
The position will be primarily based at the Fremantle facility but will also involve travel and work at other locations as required to support vessel operations, maintenance, and projects.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Operations Support
* Assist the Fleet Manager with day-to-day vessel operations, logistics, and scheduling.
* Monitor and report on vessel readiness, including fuel, stores, and planned maintenance activities.
* Support the coordination of vessel deployment, movements, and turnaround schedules.
Maintenance & Engineering
* Undertake or coordinate mechanical, electrical, and structural maintenance and repairs across the fleet.
* Support and maintain preventative maintenance programs, ensuring all work meets marine standards and manufacturer specifications.
* Maintain accurate maintenance logs, service records, and inventory control for parts and consumables.
* Liaise with contractors and suppliers for specialised works and procurement.
Troubleshooting & Technical Support
* Diagnose and resolve issues promptly across mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems.
* Provide technical support to crew and assist in implementing repairs dockside or in the field.
* Assist with vessel inspections, refits, and surveys as directed.
* Safety & Compliance
* Ensure compliance with AMSA and company safety management systems.
* Assist with safety drills, equipment checks, and maintaining compliance documentation.
* Promote and adhere to all environmental, health, and safety requirements.
Marine Electronics & Systems
* Assist with the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of navigation, communication, and monitoring systems.
* Support upgrades and diagnostics of marine electronics in coordination with service agents and technicians.
General & Administrative Support
* Assist the Fleet Manager with scheduling, reporting, and contractor coordination.
* Contribute to operational planning, performance reporting, and project improvement initiatives.
* Provide hands-on support other staff as required.
Skills & Experience
* Proven experience in vessel operations, maintenance, or marine engineering roles.
* Strong troubleshooting capability across mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems.
* Familiarity with vessel maintenance systems and safety protocols.
* Experience in small vessel handling or operations advantageous.
* Trade qualifications in marine engineering, mechanical, or electrical disciplines desirable.
* Understanding of marine compliance, safety management systems, and record keeping.
* Coxswain or Master <24m qualification advantageous but not essential.
