Responsibilities
Delivery of high-quality legal services that meet client expectations, manage business and legal risk, compliance requirements, and professional standards.
Contributing to the commercial business success of the legal team, including personal achievement of revenue expectations.
Achieving outstanding client service, relationship building, and business winning, as well as identifying business opportunities and supporting the delivery of new services.
Establishing and maintaining professional relationships with client instructing areas, ensuring recognition of the organization as a high-value legal services provider.
Representing and promoting the organization in various forums and contributing to marketing activities.
Supporting and supervising (as required) lawyers, graduates, and other practice group members to achieve practice group goals involving the delivery of legal services, effective resource utilization, and financial management of matters.
Promoting and participating in initiatives that support the broader goals and priorities of the practice group and organization.
Participating in professional development activities, organization networks, and meeting Continuing Legal Education requirements and other expectations.
Providing a safe and supportive working environment by ensuring compliance with the APS Code of Conduct and applying department policies in work health and safety, diversity, discrimination, and harassment.
Education and Experience Information
Entry in the Register of Practitioners of the High Court of Australia or the roll of barristers and solicitors of the Supreme Court of a State or Territory.
Legal experience in areas of relevance and a good knowledge of the Commonwealth legal environment.
For Lawyer (APS5), generally at least 1-4 years relevant post-admission experience (PAE) or equivalent legal experience and knowledge of the Commonwealth legal environment.
For Lawyer (APS6), generally at least years relevant PAE or equivalent legal experience and knowledge of the Commonwealth legal environment.
For Senior Lawyer (EL1), generally at least 5 years or more PAE and good knowledge of the Commonwealth legal environment.
For Senior Lawyer (EL2), generally at least 7 years or more PAE and good knowledge of the Commonwealth legal environment.
Professional standing in the Commonwealth public sector and/or legal profession.
Australian Citizenship.

Each practice area has its unique focus:
Dispute Resolution (DR): Specializes in public law litigation and provides dispute-related legal advice and representation across a diverse range of legal matters for Commonwealth agencies.
Office of General Counsel (OGC): Specializes in legal advice and assistance spanning the spectrum of the Commonwealth's activities, with expertise in constitutional and public law, statutory interpretation, and legislation administration.
Commercial: Works with Commonwealth agencies across all areas of commercial practice, providing legal advice on major projects and transactions of national importance.
The roles are full-time and non-ongoing, with opportunities available for up to 12 months, potentially extendable.
