We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Meteorologist with excellent communication skills and a deep understanding of the Emergency Management (EM) sector to work within the Decision Support Services (DSS) HPR National team. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, adaptable, resilient, and capable of delivering daily responsibilities and responding to changing circumstances.
Location
* This position is based in Canberra and will involve being embedded in the National Emergency Management Agencies (NEMA) National Situation Room (NSR).
* Operationally you will support the Australian Government to provide a coordinated response to prepare, respond and recover from disasters. This includes the delivery of weather briefings, preparedness activities and producing tailored products as required.
Reporting
* The role reports directly to the Manager HPR National Operations
* Operational collaboration with state and territory-based teams and internal subject matter experts on specific hazards will be required to ensure consistent narrative at the national level.
Requirements
* Comprehensive understanding of meteorology and its impact on Emergency Management
* Ability to extend knowledge to hydrology, oceanography, space weather, and climatology.
* Desirable: deep understanding of Bureau products and services, an understanding of Australian Government frameworks and the role of NEMA, an understanding of Australia's diverse physical geography including island territories and neighbouring countries.
* Extended hours of coverage, with the flexibility to work reasonable extra hours during significant weather events, managed in accordance with Bureau policies and operational requirements. During 1 October – 30 April the operational service operates 7 days a week and is available to surge outside of normal hours during severe weather events or when the NSR requires incident briefings.
