Aligned with the banking industry’s strategic priorities, the Policy Director manages policy portfolio areas primarily related to prudential regulation, leads responses to Government reforms (including policy formulation and advocacy), and designs industry led policy and reform initiatives. The role leads engagement with member banks and key external stakeholders, including regulators, on policy development and advocacy, and partners with ABA Corporate Affairs on government relations, media, and communications.The Policy Director provides policy leadership, technical advice and industry insights, and applies expertise in issues management.Deliver on the ABA’s strategic plan and policy action plans to demonstrate the role of Australian banks in serving customers and the community, supporting the economy, shaping the future of banking, and strengthening trust through delivering good customer outcomes (ABA strategic priorities).Build and maintain trusted relationships with member banks, particularly liaising with technical, legal and regulatory, and business teams in member banks, and take leadership positions on policy issues.Build and maintain influential relationships with external stakeholders, including consumer and business advocates, regulators and Government departments.Working with ABA Corporate Affairs, contribute to Government Affairs, media and communications plans, and attend external meetings and industry events.Working with member banks and stakeholders, develop policy and advocacy positions in response to government led reforms, and design industry led policy and reform initiatives, including industry standards and guidelines.Proactively manage policy issues, provide expert problem solving, judgement and execution when faced with complex and urgent issues.Provide intelligence trends and insights, identify leading risk indicators and emerging risks and issues.Key relationshipsHead of Economic PolicyChief of PolicyABA teamMember bank representatives, including legal, regulatory and government affairs, and business representativesGovernment departments and regulatorsKey stakeholders within relevant representative bodies, including consumer and business groups and peer industry bodies.Key accountabilitiesDesign and implement industry led initiatives to build reputation and address concerns with bank standards and practices.Proactively advocate for appropriate prudential policies with key regulatory and policy stakeholders through targeted and consistent influencing activities.Identify and escalate opportunities and risks associated with the policy portfolio accountabilities, evaluate future opportunities and risks, contribute to prioritisation of industry actions, and present insights to the ABA teams and members.Contribute to campaigns, communications, and media to raise awareness of industry commitments and initiatives.2 Issues managementWorking with member banks and stakeholders, proactively manage industry issues, applying expert problem solving and judgement in addressing complex issues and communicating and escalating risks and issues to the ABA team.Develop industry positions on prudential policy matters and advocating those positions with government and regulatory bodies and external stakeholders.Manage input from member banks through facilitating standing committees and technical working groups and 1:1 interactions.Prepare submissions to respond to consultations, reviews and inquiries into banking.Design industry standards and guidelines to promote best practices.Work with key stakeholders and other industry associations to build consensus positions and promote industry positions within reform agendas.Provide input and support into other ABA projects.Partner with ABA Corporate Affairs, including campaigns, communications, and media and contributing to the members’ newsletter.Establish and foster collaborative relationships between the ABA and member banks and other stakeholders.Build and maintain a cooperative relationship with relevant government and regulatory bodies and other relevant representative bodies.Working with ABA Corporate Affairs, contribute to Government Affairs, media and communications plans, and attend external meetings and industry events.4. Working with teamsWork collaboratively with other Policy Directors and Associate Directors to manage resources, leverage areas of expertise, and deliver high quality outcomes.Work collaboratively with all ABA teams to integrate policy, research and communications functions and contribute to the broader success of the ABA.Always demonstrate team behaviours consistent with the ABA’s Values.Knowledge and experience requiredExperienced policy, economics, legal, risk or banking operations professional with 5-10 years’ experience in financial services, ideally banking, and prudential regulationSubject matter experience in banking risk management practicesPrudential risk management experience highly desirableCredit risk management, housing, and competition policy knowledge highly desirableExtensive knowledge and experience of political and regulatory processes, media and communications and banking and financial services industryExperience in an area related to regulatory change, legal and compliance is desirableProven stakeholder management at senior executive level with a broad range of stakeholders within corporate, political, regulatory, community and media sectorsDemonstrated ability to work collaboratively with teams.Economics or policy background highly desirableStrategic thinking and focused on outcomesProven ability to network and influence key stakeholdersExcellent communication skills, written and verbal, and negotiation skillsStrong technical, legal and regulatory expertiseHighly organised and demonstrated ability to manage projects and prioritise, deliver to deadlines and work with minimal supervisionStrong attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving skillsHigh quality results, proactive, accountable and professional executionWorks constructively with teams and acts with high integrity.Key performance indicatorsAssessment of the performance of the individual in the role and the team is done in accordance with the ABA’s Performance Management Policy.
