Overview
This role sits within the financial compliance and assurance area of a large national security agency. The team is split between offices in Canberra and Melbourne and offer up to two days working from home. It is led by a new Director who has an excellent approach to working with others and is able to foster collaboration.
The Opportunity
The team is growing in size and capability and takes a flexible yet structured approach in solving problems.
You’ll be querying and using large data sets (every transaction across 15k+ credit cards) to improve non-compliance, detect potential fraud and produce reports to enable evidence-based decisions.
The Role
As an APS6 Financial Compliance Data Analyst, you will:
- Clean, transform and analyse large-scale financial data (all transactions of 15k+ credit cards) to detect potential non-compliance or fraud
- Build logical rules, for example, flagging transactions made on weekends or public holidays, to feed into dashboards and compliance testing
- Develop Power BI dashboards and visualisations that tell stories, show trends, exceptions and patterns
- Partner with auditors, risk teams and business areas to investigate anomalies and recommend control improvements
- Prepare concise reports and briefs summarising findings, risk implications, and actions
- Collaborate closely with the data science team, whose machine-learning models build on and use the datasets you prepare
The Ideal Person
You’re an experienced data analyst (or finance professional pivoting into data) who enjoys digging into large, complex datasets to uncover trends, weaknesses, or non-compliance with policy and legislation. You understand how to turn data into practical insights and how sound analysis can strengthen financial controls and assurance.
The ideal person will have
- Proven experience as a financial or compliance data analyst
- The ability to manipulate and interpret large financial datasets and prepare detailed reports
- High attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and a structured approach to problem-solving
- Qualified scepticism and sound independent judgement
- Explicit written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders
- Experience cleaning and wrangling large data sets (R, Python or SQL) with intermediate or above Power BI
Due to the nature of the work Australian Citizenship and a minimum of a Baseline security clearance is mandatory.
Salary
- $95k – $109k + 15.4% Super
- Offered as either a permanent s26 transfer or an initial 12-month non-ongoing contract
