This is a critical technical leadership role responsible for shaping and delivering our modern enterprise data platform while ensuring the stability and continuous improvement of business-as-usual (BAU) operations.
You will lead the evolution of our data ecosystem, including the transition to Microsoft Fabric, while maintaining reliable, high-performing pipelines and environments. This role balances platform transformation with operational excellence, ensuring data across digital, finance, marketing, HR, and operations is scalable, trusted, and decision-ready.
You will provide hands-on leadership to data engineers, modernise legacy pipelines, uplift engineering capability, and embed strong operational standards to drive reliability and performance.
Key Responsibilities
1. Data Platform Leadership & Architecture
Lead design and evolution of the enterprise data platform in partnership with Enterprise Architecture.
Drive adoption of lakehouse architecture, scalable pipelines, and modular data modelling.
Provide architectural oversight across digital and enterprise initiatives.
2. BAU Operations & Reliability
Ensure reliable operation of pipelines and platform services.
Manage incidents, root cause analysis, and remediation.
Establish monitoring, alerting, and operational standards.
Balance strategic transformation with day-to-day delivery.
3. Engineering Leadership
Provide technical leadership and mentorship to data engineers.
Uplift capability across Fabric, dbt, and modern cloud patterns.
Define coding, modelling, and deployment standards.
Foster accountability and continuous improvement.
4. Delivery & Stakeholder Engagement
Lead delivery across digital, marketing, finance, and enterprise domains.
Translate business requirements into scalable solutions.
Act as a trusted technical advisor and manage competing priorities.
5. Governance & Modernisation
Implement data quality, lineage, retention, and governance standards.
Lead Fabric implementation and migration from legacy ETL/warehouse environments.
Introduce CI/CD, version control, automated testing, and reduce technical debt.
What We're Looking For
Essential
10+ years' experience in data engineering, including platform modernisation and production environments.
Proven experience leading or acting as a senior technical lead.
Deep experience with Microsoft data platforms: Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, Microsoft Fabric.
Strong SQL (incl. PL/SQL), PySpark, and programming capability (Python, C#).
Experience with dbt, MS Purview, semantic modelling, CI/CD, version control, and automated testing.
Strong understanding of lakehouse, medallion architecture, data warehousing, and pipeline design.
Experience operating and supporting production data platforms with monitoring and reliability practices.
Ability to manage complex stakeholders and competing priorities.
