Unique Environment Advisor position available based in Cairns

A leading government-owned corporation in North Queensland is seeking a motivated Environment Advisor to join their Cairns-based team. This corporation manages and maintains critical port infrastructure and assets, with a strong focus on operational efficiency, safety, and compliance. Your new role
You will provide technical environmental advice across port operations, ensuring activities meet legislative obligations, regulatory approvals and licence conditions. A key focus of the role is maintaining and continuously improving the Environmental Management System (EMS) in line with ISO standards and embedding it across day‑to‑day operations.
* Own the EMS cycle: review, update and improve EMS framework and tools, benchmark against best practice, drive corrective and preventative actions.
* Manage approvals and permits: prepare and coordinate environmental approvals and associated documentation, liaise with regulators, track conditions and renewal timelines.
* Deliver monitoring and reporting: plan and undertake environmental monitoring and site inspections (approx. 20% fieldwork), analyse results, prepare compliance, audit and performance reports for internal and external stakeholders.
* Assure compliance: support internal audits and compliance reviews, interpret approval and licence conditions, provide clear guidance to operational teams to ensure consistent implementation across jurisdictions.
* Engage stakeholders: collaborate with the management team, operations, contractors and community stakeholders to embed environmental best practice and build awareness.
What you'll need to succeed
* Qualifications: Tertiary degree in an Environmental related field (Bachelors or Masters)
* Experience: Minimum 3-5 years' post‑graduate experience in environmental compliance/approvals, ideally gained in ports, environmental consultancy, mining, local government/council or comparable infrastructure environments.
* Systems & standards: hands‑on experience with EMS frameworks and ISO compliance (audits, continual improvement).
* Approvals & permitting: demonstrated ability to prepare and manage environmental approvals and permits; exposure to marine/coastal approvals is advantageous.
* Field & analytics: competency in environmental monitoring and fieldwork, with the ability to interpret data and translate findings into practical actions and reports.
* Soft skills: strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills, clear written communication, attention to detail, and a continuous‑improvement mindset.
