An outstanding opportunity exists for an accomplished senior lawyer to assume the role of General Counsel with a market-leading Australian energy business.
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer and sitting as a member of the Executive Leadership Team, this appointment offers the chance to shape corporate strategy, governance, and risk management at the highest level, while guiding the organisation through a period of significant growth and transformation in the renewable energy sector.
The role may be based in Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane.
The RoleThe General Counsel will serve as the company's chief legal adviser, providing authoritative counsel to the Board, CEO, and senior leadership team.
With responsibility for the legal, risk, and governance functions, the role will be central to major corporate initiatives, including complex commercial negotiations, project development, financing, and regulatory engagement.
Key responsibilities include:
Delivering executive-level legal advice to the CEO and Board, ensuring alignment of legal frameworks with corporate strategy and objectives.
Leading the legal, risk, and governance functions, instilling a culture of excellence, accountability, and high performance.
Overseeing corporate governance as Company Secretary, ensuring best practice across Board and Committee operations.
Managing high-value transactions including offtake agreements, PPAs, EPC contracts, financings, and strategic partnerships.
Developing and executing risk management, compliance, and insurance strategies to protect the organisation's long-term interests.
Representing the business in engagements with regulators, government, and industry stakeholders.
Candidate ProfileThe successful candidate will be an experienced senior lawyer with:
15+ years' post-admission experience including a leadership role inhouse with an energy or infrastructure organisation
Demonstrated senior leadership of legal teams and direct engagement with Boards and C-Suites.
Strong expertise in corporate governance, risk management, and high-value commercial transactions.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the energy or infrastructure sectors, particularly in relation to large-scale projects and regulatory frameworks.
A commercial mindset, strong negotiation skills, and the ability to balance strategic opportunity with disciplined risk management.
High emotional quotient and strong alignment to the company's values is essential.
