About the Role
We are seeking a passionate and skilled Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Practitioner to join our Stopping Family Violence program in Cairns. This is a permanent part-time role (52.5 hours per fortnight) where you'll play a vital role in fostering safety and positive change in the community.
In this role, you will facilitate group sessions with men who use violence, supporting accountability and behaviour change, while prioritising the safety and wellbeing of their partners, children, and families. You'll also provide individual counselling where needed and contribute to community education initiatives that raise awareness of DFV and promote prevention strategies.
Your contribution will make a tangible difference in addressing and preventing domestic and family violence, helping to create safer, stronger, and healthier communities across the Cairns region.
Additionally, you will:
* Assessing men for suitability in program participation, and case managing each client to ensure the safety of the client and their family
* Facilitating groups, and providing crisis intervention and individual counselling to perpetrators of domestic violence
* Providing information and support in relation to protection orders, court processes and the Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act
* Developing, implementing and evaluating training and education programs within the community
* Developing and maintaining appropriate contact with police, solicitors, court staff, other counsellors and community agencies in the region to facilitate a community response to domestic violence
Work hours will be negotiated with the successful candidate. Please note some flexibility is required, including one evening shift per week (between 9.30am and 8pm).
About You
You are a compassionate and skilled practitioner with a strong commitment to preventing domestic and family violence and creating safer futures for individuals and families. With qualifications in the social or behavioural sciences, you bring experience in both group facilitation and individual counselling, along with the ability to engage respectfully and effectively with clients. You are confident working within community networks, partnering with agencies, and applying principles of community development to strengthen coordinated responses. Your knowledge of DFV theory and practice, combined with your passion for community education and behavioural change, equips you to make a meaningful impact in this vital role.
Additionally, you have:
* Undergraduate qualifications in the social or behavioural sciences.
* Experience working with clients in a group facilitation model and in individual counselling.
* Demonstrated experience working with local networks and agencies using principles of community development.
* Knowledge of current theory and practice relating to domestic and family violence and a capacity to deliver community education programs.
