The Spectator is a world-renowned magazine with a rich history of publishing incisive commentary and engaging features. Our editorial team is expanding, and we're seeking a skilled Night Editor to join our global operation based in Sydney or the surrounding region.
This remote role provides vital overnight coverage for our UK and global operations, ensuring that newsletters are drafted, news agendas are monitored, and breaking stories are surfaced while London sleeps. You will work closely with our editorial and production teams in London to transform our newsletter output and strengthen our round-the-clock news operation.
Key Responsibilities
* Draft and prepare our flagship newsletters for the following morning's distribution
* Monitor breaking news and identify key stories and developments during overnight UK hours
* Conduct newsgathering across global and UK news sources, providing clear overnight briefings to London teams
* Draft early versions of stories, headlines, and summaries for editorial refinement on handover
* Collaborate with editors, writers, and production staff to maintain our tone, accuracy, and editorial standards
* Perform light editing, fact-checking, and proofreading during overnight hours
* Assist in managing and updating the website with breaking news or developing stories if required
Requirements
* Excellent knowledge of our editorial voice and audience
* A strong interest and knowledge of British politics, current affairs, and culture – with the ability to assess news value overnight
* Experience in newsletter production and/or digital publishing is strongly preferred
* Strong writing and headline-writing skills, with an ability to capture our distinctive tone
* Excellent editorial judgement, attention to detail, and accuracy
* The ability to work independently and take responsibility for overnight editorial output
* Strong time management and organisational skills
* A sense of humour and a well-developed sense of the absurd
