This organisation plays a vital role in delivering infrastructure, housing, and community development initiatives. As part of its commitment to safety-first operations, they are seeking a capable and culturally aware Safety Officer to support their growing operational teams. This is a temporary role with an immediate start, offering a FIFO Hybrid arrangement and the potential for extension or permanency.
Your new role
This essential position will provide on-site safety leadership across Council operations, including civil works, fleet maintenance, and contractor-led projects. Reporting directly to the Deputy CEO, you will work closely with field staff, supervisors, and governance teams to embed a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with WHS legislation and procedures.
The role requires a calm, hands-on approach with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Responsibilities:
* Conducting site safety inspections and audits
* Monitoring compliance with WHS procedures and legislation
* Leading toolbox talks, safety briefings, and training sessions
* Supporting incident investigations and corrective actions
* Maintaining accurate WHS records and reporting systems
* Reviewing SWMS, risk assessments, and PPE protocols
* Mentoring workers and contractors on safe work practices
* Promoting a safety-first culture across all divisions
* Supporting Indigenous workforce development initiatives
* Navigating internal systems and documentation
What you'll need to succeed
To thrive in this role, you will bring:
* Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (or working towards)
* Construction White Card
* Queensland "C" Class Driver's Licence (manual and auto)
* Experience in safety or compliance roles within construction, maintenance, or Council environments
* Strong understanding of Queensland WHS legislation and codes of practice
* Ability to mentor and support field-based staff
* Calm, respectful presence with high attention to detail
* Cultural awareness and ability to work in remote Indigenous settings
* Proficiency in WHS management software and reporting systems
