Role Overview
We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our product development team. This role will focus on designing, testing, and refining 4x4 accessories (steel and aluminium), ensuring they meet both functional and aesthetic requirements while adhering to compliance standards. The successful candidate will work closely with engineers, fabricators, and production teams to bring new products from concept to market.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead the mechanical design of new 4x4 accessories (e.g., bullbars, trays, canopies, roof racks, rear bars).
* Create detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and 2D manufacturing drawings.
* Apply engineering principles to optimise strength, weight, manufacturability, and safety.
* Conduct FEA simulations and tolerance analysis for structural integrity.
* Support prototyping and testing, including fitment trials and compliance checks.
* Collaborate with fabrication and manufacturing teams (CNC, brake-press, robot welding, hand welding).
* Prepare technical documentation, BOMs, and compliance plates.
* Work with suppliers and stakeholders to ensure quality, cost-effectiveness, and timely production.
* Stay up to date with design trends, competitor products, and industry standards.
* Ensure designs comply with ADRs (Australian Design Rules) and other regulatory requirements.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential:
* Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
* 2+ years' experience in mechanical/product design (preferably in automotive, off-road, or heavy fabrication).
* Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar).
* Strong understanding of manufacturing processes (sheet metal, CNC, welding, extrusion).
* Knowledge of FEA, materials selection, and design optimisation.
* Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
* Ability to manage multiple projects with attention to detail.
* Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
Desirable:
* Experience in automotive aftermarket or off-road accessory design.
* Familiarity with ADR compliance and vehicle crash safety requirements.
* Experience with KeyShot or similar rendering software.
* Hands-on fabrication or prototyping experience.
