Overview

The Forecast Quality Team Leader leads a team in the Research Program aimed at undertaking research and development of techniques to verify and evaluate the Bureau's forecasts and warnings. Current priorities for the team include extending and improving existing tools such as Jive and METplus. Potential future directions are likely to include: an expansion into warning and decision-oriented verification; contributing to improved public communication of the Bureau's forecast performance; and investigating verification techniques that may be needed for the evaluation of new tools such as data-driven Machine Learning models.

The Forecast Quality Team Leader will also lead relevant aspects of communication and engagement across the Bureau, working closely with stakeholders to identify priorities that support operational and strategic needs. The successful candidate will be appointed at a level commensurate with their experience.

Key duties

* Team Leaders are expected to spend 80 per cent of their time engaging in research activities relevant to the team's portfolio of research projects, including but not limited to:
* Performing scientific investigations that successfully deliver improved Bureau products and services, creating impact and value for customers
* Publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals, technical or research reports with demonstrable impact for the Bureau.
* Presenting results at internal meetings/seminars, and at external national forums (project meetings/conferences).
* Providing expert scientific advice to the Science and Innovation Leadership Team, and internal or external customers.
* Team leaders are expected to spend 20 per cent of their time managing and leading the team, including but not limited to:
* Leading one of the Research Program's teams responsible for undertaking research activities to support the delivery of the Bureau's services, in close collaboration with the Section Manager and other Team Leaders.
* Engaging in powerful collaboration across Bureau programs including Research to Operations, Data and Digital, National Production and Environmental Prediction, and the Business Solutions Group, in close collaboration with the Section Manager.
* Leadership to implement workforce planning, develop learning and competency improvement as required amongst the team's staff, in close collaboration with the Section Manager.
* An enduring and systematic bias to action in support of the Bureau's Health Safety and Environment (HSE) and commitment to Diversity & Inclusion initiatives.

Leadership qualities

* Team leaders will display a collaborative style to operate as a team of leaders in support of Section and Program-wide objectives.
* A track record leading teams to develop new and enhanced products and services that harness science and technology to best create customer impact and value.
* Relevant leadership experience in complex and dynamic operating environments, including sophisticated project management skills and experience leading geographically distributed, multidisciplinary teams.
* Demonstrated people management skills, with expertise in developing senior customer and partner relationships both internally and externally.
* An ability to coach, develop and mentor individuals and teams to understand science outputs and their relevance to customer needs, and how to transition them into reliable, relevant, high value products and services.

Eligibility

Qualifications & experience

Doctor of Philosophy (or an equivalent combination of other tertiary qualifications and research experience, appropriate to the duties).
