Payroll Team Leader
Job Description:
* The Payroll Team Leader oversees accurate, timely and confidential end-to-end payroll processing in a 24/7 hospitality environment.
* They provide day-to-day oversight and coaching to Payroll Officers, ensuring compliance with statutory obligations including STP, superannuation and payroll tax.
* The role assists with systems administration, reconciliations and reporting, and partners with HR and Finance leaders to resolve payroll matters promptly.
Responsibilities:
1. Run accurate fortnightly payroll, including loadings, penalties, allowances, deductions, leave, backpay and basic terminations; investigate variances and process corrections.
2. Import, validate and reconcile time-and-attendance data; maintain rates and rules, perform UAT, and liaise with vendors/IT on fixes.
3. Prepare and lodge STP Phase 2, EOFY and super; assist with payroll tax, Child Support and union fee reporting; maintain reconciliations, audit trails and required sign-offs.
4. Maintain employee records and handle third-party requests in line with privacy; support WGEA reporting cycles.
5. Respond to payroll queries; prepare GL batch files and routine reports; support costings and variance analysis for leaders.
6. Interpret and apply the Enterprise Agreement and awards (e.g. HIGA); monitor legislative changes and provide training with senior support.
7. Coordinate two Payroll Officers, set priorities, review outputs, ensure cross-coverage, step in during peaks, and maintain SOPs and on-the-job training.
Requirements:
* 3–5 years' end-to-end payroll experience in a high-volume, 24/7 environment, ideally hospitality or gaming.
* Demonstrated application of enterprise agreements and modern awards (including HIGA) in day-to-day scenarios.
* Strong knowledge of the Fair Work Act, NES, enterprise agreements and awards (incl. HIGA), ATO requirements (STP Phase 2, PAYG), superannuation guarantee, payroll tax, WGEA and privacy.
* Proficient with payroll and T&A systems, including rule/rate maintenance, access controls and audit trails.
* Advanced Excel; able to prepare GL files and routine payroll reports, and deliver costings plus trend/variance analysis.
* Clear communicator with HR, Finance, operations, vendors and employees; explain complex payroll and industrial matters simply.
* Proven coordination of Payroll Officers, coaching and stepping in during peaks; high attention to detail and disciplined processes, with availability for public holidays and longer hours when required.
