The opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for you to step into a key role supporting Council's Billing & Recovery team as they deliver accurate, timely and community‑focused rating and revenue services. You'll play an important part in maintaining Wollongong's rating database, ensuring rates, instalments, supplementary levies and invoices are billed correctly, and helping provide exceptional service to our community.

Working in a supportive, team‑based environment, you'll deliver rates, billing and recovery services while contributing to a culture of continuous improvement. You'll draw on your accounts receivable, billing and debt recovery skills to process rates, manage payment arrangements and handle debt in a way that balances effective recovery with a strong customer focus. From managing arrears and contacting customers who owe money, through to analysing broken arrangements and supporting rating‑related recovery tasks, you'll play a vital role in maintaining accurate records, ensuring efficient workflows and creating positive experiences for ratepayers.

What you will be doing

You'll be at the heart of our billing and recovery function, raising invoices, processing credits and payment arrangements, and stepping in confidently to manage debt recovery with a professional, customer‑focused approach. From contacting customers and analysing broken arrangements to supporting arrears and other rating‑related recovery tasks, you'll help keep our financial processes running smoothly and accurately. You'll also play an active role in improving how we work by spotting workflow issues early, contributing ideas, and helping refine our Rates and Debtor processes.

As part of a collaborative, supportive team, you'll deliver exceptional customer service, guiding ratepayers through their enquiries and building strong connections across other Council units to enhance communication and work practices. You'll maintain the integrity of debtor records, negotiate payment agreements, assist with reconciliations and credit facility reviews, and proudly uphold Council's purpose, values and WHS responsibilities, making a positive impact on both service delivery and the community we serve.

About you

You bring strong experience across debtors, billing, and accounting environments, with exceptional accuracy in data entry and confident use of billing systems and Microsoft applications. A quick learner, you adapt easily to new processes, systems, and legislative requirements, including rates services.

Your high‑level numeracy, literacy, and problem‑solving skills allow you to manage complex enquiries with confidence, while your clear and professional communication ensures positive interactions with both internal and external stakeholders.

You work effectively both independently and within a small team, contributing to a supportive, collaborative, and efficient work environment. Highly organised, you handle competing deadlines with ease.

You have hands‑on experience in debt recovery, where you consistently demonstrate discretion, confidentiality, sound judgement, and professionalism.

This is a full-time 12-month term contract position with the possibility of extension. Salary from $78,929 up to $90,935 per annum plus superannuation. (Salary package will be assessed based on skills, experience and qualifications)
