Position Overview
The Telecommunications Technician will be responsible for the installation, programming, configuration, and ongoing support of Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) systems, with a particular focus on the Motorola MOTOTRBO suite of products. System topologies that are a primary focus include IP Site Connect, Multisite Capacity Plus and Capacity Max networks. The role will ensure high-performance radio communications through the deployment and maintenance of Repeaters, RF Combining Hardware, Antenna systems, Power systems, Subscriber radio terminals, and System applications including infrastructure, enabling reliable and scalable communications across operational sites.
Key Responsibilities
System Installation & Commissioning
* Install, configure, and commission Motorola MOTOTRBO Repeaters, Subscriber radios, System and Application servers. System topologies being focused on include IP Site Connect, Multisite Capacity, Capacity max and Trbonet applications.
* Create and modify system configuration files including programming of radio terminals and infrastructure using Radio Manager (RM) Customer Programming Software (CPS).
* Deploy and align RF equipment, antennas, and cabling to design specifications.
Operations & Maintenance
* Conduct preventative and corrective maintenance on Motorola MOTOTRBO base stations and subscriber units.
* Monitor system health, conduct signal quality tests, and troubleshoot RF or IP-related issues.
* Perform firmware upgrades, patching, and hardware replacement as needed.
System Integration
* Implement IP Site Connect, Multisite Capacity Plus and Capacity Max configurations for voice and data applications.
* Integrate MOTOTRBO systems with IP backhaul, microwave links and dispatch platforms.
* Configure and provide customer application advice on features such as GPS tracking, text/data messaging, and telemetry applications.
Technical Support & Documentation
* Provide Level 2/3 support to operational staff and end-users.
* Maintain accurate programming records, site documentation, and system configuration logs.
* Prepare reports and as-built documentation for project handover.
Compliance & Safety
* Ensure compliance with ACMA licensing, spectrum management, and WHS requirements.
* Adhere to cybersecurity best practices for networked radio infrastructure.
Key Skills & Competencies
* Strong technical knowledge of Motorola MOTOTRBO DMR systems.
* Experience with MOTOTRBO repeaters (e.g., SLR 5500/8000 series) and subscriber radios.
* Practical understanding of RF propagation, antenna systems, duplexers, and combiners.
* Familiarity with IP networking concepts (routing, switching, VLANs, QoS).
* Ability to read and interpret system diagrams, RF path profiles, and site schematics.
* Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
* Effective communication and teamwork abilities, with a customer-focused mindset.
Qualifications & Experience
* Certificate or Diploma in Telecommunications, Electronics, or a related field
* 3+ years’ experience in radio communications, with hands-on MOTOTRBO DMR experience.
* Demonstrated knowledge of MOTOTRBO system architecture design and deployment.
* ACMA Open Cabling Registration (preferred).
* RF Awareness and Working at Heights certification (preferred).
* Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel to remote or regional sites as required.
* Experience and willingness to work remotely (Preferred).
