Atomic-scale modelling of hydrogen embrittlement is a crucial aspect of materials science. This role involves performing ab-initio and molecular dynamics simulations to understand how hydrogen affects deformation at different microstructural features in alloys. The ultimate goal is to aid future alloy design. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing inter-atomic potentials using a combination of classical and machine-learning approaches, as well as creating high-fidelity 1:1 models of experimentally-observed atom probe datasets.
Job Description:
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be part of a recently awarded ARC discovery project between UNSW Sydney and the University of Sydney. The team will collaborate closely with the experimental group at USyd to integrate modelling work within the experimental tasks.
* Performing simulations at the atomic-scale, including density functional theory and molecular dynamics
* Developing inter-atomic potentials – classical or ML-based
* Creating high-fidelity 1:1 models of experimentally-observed atom probe datasets
Required Skills and Qualifications:
A PhD in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience are essential for this role. Strong coding skills in commonly used scientific languages, such as Python, Matlab, shell script, and C, are also required. Additionally, knowledge of development of inter-atomic potentials – classical or ML-based, and proven commitment to proactively keeping up-to-date with discipline knowledge and developments, are necessary.
* Strong coding skills in scientific languages (e.g. Python, Matlab)
* Knowledge of development of inter-atomic potentials
* Proven commitment to proactively keeping up-to-date with discipline knowledge
Benefits:
This is a full-time fixed-term contract position for 2 years. The salary range is AUD $110,059 to $117,718 per annum + 17% superannuation. The role reports to Associate Professor Patrick Burr and has no direct reports.
