We are seeking an experienced APS6 Historian to join the Community Engagement History Team.
This team provides historical expertise across the department, supporting executive leadership and the Minister with services such as speech writing, essays, fact-checking, and professional guidance on military history.
The team also develops historical commemorative resources including books, posters, and calendars.
Working under limited direction of the Assistant Director, the successful candidate will engage with internal staff, ex-service organisations, veterans and their families, and the general public.
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, high level research skills, and proven ability to manage competing priorities in a dynamic environment.
For this role, it is necessary to have an Honours, Masters (research) or PhD in History with a focus on military history or war and society as it relates to Australia.
For Honours and Masters, preference may be given to candidates currently studying for a PhD in History.
This is initially a 9-week contract from 1 December through to 29 January (with 24 December – 1 January inclusive shutdown), working 37.5 hours per week, based in Canberra or Melbourne.
Key Responsibilities: Contribute to historically accurate content for Ministers, executives, and the public to deepen understanding of Australian service.
Manage multiple priorities and projects with fixed deadlines tied to commemorative anniversaries.
Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to promote and improve historical resources.
Provide expert advice and contribute to briefings, papers, submissions, and correspondence Contribute to the development of content, advice, briefings, papers, submissions and correspondence.
Essential Requirements: Honours, Masters (research), or PhD in History with a focus on military history or war and society in an Australian context.
Demonstrated high-level research skills and ability to produce accurate, high-quality content under tight deadlines.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively, managing competing demands effectively.
