Details: The ACT Government is seeking a qualified and experienced professional to fill the position of Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment.
The Commissioner is an independent statutory position established by the Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment Act 1993 (the Act).
The Commissioner serves a critical advisory, reporting, and oversight function for the ACT Government in safeguarding the Territory's environment; and promoting ecologically sustainable planning and development in the ACT.
The Commissioner is responsible for receiving and addressing community inquiries regarding environmental management within the ACT.
In fulfilling these functions, the Commissioner must consider the Objects of the Act, which are to:
* Ensure regular and consistent reporting on matters relating to the condition and management of the environment in the Territory.
* Ensure regular reporting on progress towards ecologically sustainable development by the Territory and territory authorities.
* Encourage decision-making that facilitates ecologically sustainable development.
* Enhance knowledge and understanding of issues relating to ecologically sustainable development and the environment.
* Encourage sound environmental practices and procedures to be adopted by the Territory and territory authorities as a basis for ecologically sustainable development.
Remuneration: The position attracts a remuneration package ranging from $330,580 - $340,787 depending on current superannuation arrangements of the successful applicant. This includes a cash component of $291,627.
Contract: The successful applicant will be engaged under a performance-based long-term contract for a period of up to five years. Prospective applicants should be aware that long-term engagements are tabled in the ACT Legislative Assembly.
Note: The Commissioner role may be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis, depending on the circumstances of the successful candidate.

City and Environment Directorate was established on the 1 July 2025. This new directorate is an amalgamation of positions previously advertised under Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate and Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate.
