We’re looking for a Data Governance Lead to establish and embed data governance frameworks that will support our University's digital enablement plan and enterprise strategic projects. This is a newly created role, giving you the rare opportunity to define and mature the data governance capability from the ground up. You'll lead the development of governance practices for structured data, enabling better decision-making, improving data quality, and ensuring security and efficiency across integrated systems. The Role As the Data Governance Lead, you will: Design, implement and manage the University's Data Governance Framework, policies and procedures. Lead the classification of data assets and establish data quality standards, master data processes, and related governance structures. Work closely with business stakeholders, IT, and cybersecurity teams to ensure data governance aligns with security requirements and enterprise architecture strategy. Contribute to training, support, and the development of tools and documentation that build awareness and capability across the institution. Provide hands-on configuration and application support for Microsoft data governance tooling, especially Microsoft Purview and Microsoft Fabric. Meet with stakeholders across the university to discuss and guide data governance needs. Collaborate with cybersecurity and digital governance colleagues to align governance practices with security protocols. Configure and manage Microsoft Purview tooling to support data cataloguing and governance. Classify and manage structured data sets to support major strategic initiatives. Educate teams on data governance principles and best practices through workshops or one-on-one support. Prioritise governance tasks based on business risk and enterprise data strategy This full time position is fixed term for 3 years at a HEW 8 Higher Education Level located at Callaghan Campus. Demonstrated extensive experience in data governance implementations, including data profiling, data classification, data cataloguing, data lineage, metadata management, master data management as well as privacy and security concepts. Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing and maintaining data governance frameworks, as well as tools, and processes, particularly using Microsoft Purview and Fabric as the technical enabler. Excellent organisational skills and business acumen with a demonstrated ability to quickly and effectively understand complicated business concepts and efficiently align those with a data governance framework as well as the University’s overall goals and objectives. Ability to work independently and cooperatively as an effective member of a team. Demonstrated stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to actively engage and communicate data governance to diverse audiences. Some understanding of the BI and analytics sphere. Excellent interpersonal skills including the capacity to build relationships at senior level and an inter-disciplinary way of working. Demonstrated knowledge of workplace obligations to, and experience in leading and cultivating workplace practices and behaviours that promote, support and maintain a safe, healthy, equitable, diverse and respectful workplace, including responding appropriately to adverse incidents, behaviours, issues, reports and the like. It is desirable that the successful candidate also possess the following: Relevant certifications such as CDMP or DMBOK Experience with agile teams and projects Familiarity with the Higher Education Sector.
