Position Overview
The Kitchen Hand / Assistant Cook supports the Head Chef in the day-to-day operation of the kitchen. This role involves food preparation, cooking, cleaning, and maintaining high standards of food safety and kitchen organization.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation & Cooking
* Assist the Head Chef with daily food preparation and service
* Prepare and cook menu items according to recipes, portion sizes, and presentation standards
* Ensure consistency and quality of all food served
* Assist with basic menu preparation for lunch and dinner
Kitchen Operations
* Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient kitchen workspace
* Assist with stock rotation, labelling, and storage of food items
* Notify the Head Chef or Manager of low stock or supply issues
Food Safety & Compliance
* Follow all food safety, hygiene, and workplace health and safety requirements
* Comply with Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) guidelines and NSW Food Authority requirements
* Maintain cleanliness of food preparation areas, equipment, and storage areas
Teamwork & Communication
* Work cooperatively with the chef, front-of-house staff, and management
* Follow instructions accurately and ask questions when clarification is required
* Maintain a professional and positive attitude during busy service periods
Skills & Experience
* Previous experience as a kitchen hand, cook, or assistant cook in Chinese restaurant is preferred
* Ability to follow recipes and menu specifications accurately
* Basic cooking skills and an understanding of food preparation techniques
* Ability to work independently when required
* Strong attention to cleanliness, organisation, and detail
