We are looking for a Tenant Advocate to join the BMTAAS team, located at Katoomba. The position is permanent part time, 14 hours per week, SCHADS award level 6.

The role involves providing information, advice and casework to tenants (including social housing tenants), and representing clients at the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT) in Katoomba and occasionally in Penrith. Additionally the role may involve some community education activities, resource development, duty advocacy work at NCAT, and law reform activities.

This is a job share position with an experienced Tenant Advocate who will work 3 days a week. Ideally you would be available to work on Tuesday and Wednesdays to allow for you to have a cross-over day with each other, however there is some flexibility for the right candidate.

Selection Criteria

These are tasks/education/experience specific requirements, which the candidate must have to carry out the position:

Essential:

1. Demonstrated understanding and commitment to tenant rights.
2. Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the philosophy of community legal centres, the promotion of human rights, social justice and meeting the legal and non-legal needs of socially and economically disadvantaged people and groups.
3. Demonstrated ability to take initiative, manage time, competing priorities, and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, including the supervision of a broad range of volunteers.
4. Demonstrated ability to communicate and negotiate effectively with clients, other parties, government and community organisations.
5. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
6. Completion of First Nations specific cultural safety training or be willing to undertake cultural safety training.
7. Hold a current NSW driver's licence.

Desirable:

1. Experience working as a Tenant Advocate.
2. Experience working in a community legal centre or knowledge of the sector.
3. Experience in community legal education and law reform.


Key entitlements

The position is graded at SCHADS grade 6, with above award conditions from our Enterprise Agreement, including:

* Award rates of pay are based on a full-time employee working 38 hours per week whereas full time Employees engaged by the CTBMCLC have the benefit of equal pay for a 35 hour work week.
* Salary sacrifice up to $15900 p.a ( FBT year is 1 April to 31 March)
* Meal and Entertainment card
* 4 weeks Annual Leave p.a. with leave-loading bonus of 17.5% of the gross salary for the period of leave
* Generous 2 weeks leave during centre closure over Christmas/new year in addition to 4 weeks annual leave
* Time in lieu
* 5 days special leave days
* 5 days Compassionate Leave
