About the Role:
Reporting to the Manager Building and Planning Services, the Head of Planning Services provides strategic leadership and delivery of the Strategic and Statutory Planning functions. The position oversees 16 employees and has the responsibility for delivering:
* Strategic Planning services aligned to the Community Vision and Council Plan;
* An efficient Statutory Planning service to the community; and
* An improved customer experience across the team and other departments.
Key responsibilities will include:
* Lead and motivate the team to deliver high-quality planning services.
* Drive strategic and statutory planning policies, including complex matters.
* Oversee community consultation and advocate on planning issues.
* Negotiate outcomes with developers, government, and community.
* Maintain and update the Planning Scheme, including amendments.
* Manage specialist consultants to ensure best practice outcomes.
* Deliver strong customer service aligned to Council standards.
About You - Your Success Profile:
* Extensive experience leading planning teams across diverse developments (rural, urban, coastal, industrial, commercial).
* Proven leadership of high-performing Strategic and Statutory Planning functions.
* Strong people leader - builds capability and drives a values-led culture.
* Contributes to Council Plan and Community Vision through strategic land use planning.
* Deep understanding and administration of Planning Schemes and relevant legislation.
* Ethical, influential leader with sound judgement and empathy.
* Strong financial acumen and experience managing large budgets.
* Comfortable handling complex, sensitive issues with professionalism.
Tertiary qualifications in Town/Strategic/Statutory Planning or a related discipline would be required for this role, with eligibility for PIA membership. Experience working within a large, complex or similar environment would also be necessary.
