The Australian is seeking a dynamic and strategic Deputy Business Editor to help drive the masthead's business coverage to new heights. Reporting to the Business Editor, this role is ideal for an experienced journalist or early career editor with strong news sense, proven leadership skills, and a passion for delivering distinctive, agenda-setting business journalism across platforms.

What's the role?
The Australian is seeking a dynamic and strategic Deputy Business Editor to help drive the masthead's business coverage to new heights. Reporting to the Business Editor, this role is ideal for an experienced journalist or early career editor with strong news sense, proven leadership skills, and a passion for delivering distinctive, agenda-setting business journalism across platforms.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Business Editor to lead a high-performing team, sharpen our daily coverage, and ensure we consistently produce original reporting and analysis that matters to investors, policymakers, and business leaders. You will play a key role in strengthening our business coverage, growing our audience, and supporting the masthead's digital and print ambitions.
Responsibilities

* Lead daily and long-term editorial planning across sectors like banking, markets, energy, tech, property, and policy, while setting coverage priorities and guiding impactful journalism.
* Commission, edit and publish high-quality content across print, digital, audio and video platforms, ensuring clear, authoritative reporting and alignment with the newsroom's editorial standards.
* Manage the business desk's operations, including roster oversight, workflow coordination, leave management, and print planning, while deputising for the Business Editor as needed.
* Mentor and support reporters, encouraging exclusive reporting, strong sourcing, analytical depth, and enterprise journalism that drives engagement and reader loyalty.
* Drive digital strategy and collaboration, including SEO and social media planning, story placement, and participation in newsroom conferences and briefings, with regular weekend and flexible hours as required.
Who are you?
* At least five years' journalism experience, including demonstrated ability to edit and lead complex business coverage.
* Strong news judgement, with a track record of identifying original, high-impact stories. A professional approach to administering copy clarifications and corrections.
* Experience working with reporters to develop ideas, strengthen reporting and refine storytelling.
* A strong understanding of Australia's business, financial markets, corporate governance and regulatory environment — or the ability to develop this quickly.
* First-rate editing skills with a sharp eye for accuracy, clarity, fairness and tone.
* A digital-first mindset and familiarity with digital publishing tools and techniques.
* Excellent organisational skills, the ability to manage competing priorities, and a calm approach under deadline pressure. A willingness to accept feedback and respond accordingly.
* A collaborative, supportive attitude and strong communication skills.
* A commitment to journalistic ethics and editorial excellence.
* Knowledge of audience analytics, SEO and newsletter strategy would be an advantage.

* Working hours start from 7:00am
