Offer description

The role
Join our passionate team at the Rookwood salmon hatchery, nestled in the heart of the Huon Valley in Ranelagh (only 30 minutes south of Hobart). We are seeking a dedicated Hatchery Attendant / Technician to play a pivotal role in the early stages of our salmon's lifecycle.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a self-motivated team player with a genuine interest in freshwater fish farming. You will join our smolt team, performing essential tasks such as assessing feed and water quality, monitoring fish welfare, conducting weight checks, and daily tank cleaning. Working within a small, supportive team requires adaptability and the ability to think on your feet.
The role is full-time, working 40 hours per week on a Monday to Friday roster (typically 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM).
Following a comprehensive training period and upon gaining experience (typically after about one year), you will be expected to participate in a weekly overnight shift for system monitoring and fish care as part of the team rotation.
Responsibilities
Operate and monitor advanced Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), ensuring optimal water quality parameters (e.g., oxygen, temperature, pH).
Conduct daily fish husbandry tasks, including feeding, health and behaviour monitoring, tank cleaning, and system maintenance.
Accurately collect, record, and report key data on fish growth, feed consumption, mortality, and water quality.
Perform routine equipment checks, basic maintenance, and troubleshooting to ensure optimal system performance.
Strictly adhere to and champion all safety procedures, biosecurity protocols, and company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Assist with fish handling activities such as grading, vaccination, and transfers as required.
Maintain a clean, safe, and organised work environment.
Please note: To be successful, you must be able to provide proof that you have the right to work in Australia (birth certificate/passport) and be willing to complete a pre-employment medical assessment and drug & alcohol screening.
Role offerings
A permanent, full-time role with a leading, sustainable aquaculture company.
A competitive salary recognising your contribution.
Career development opportunities within the wider Tassal Group.
A safe and inclusive workplace with an unwavering commitment to your wellbeing.
Company culture
Our people each contribute in different ways, embracing our business values and harnessing our can do – safely culture with purpose and intent. Our shared values are an essential part of our business culture, they define us. They underpin and guide our commitment, attitude, how we work and the quality of our products. We are passionate, we achieve together, we own it and we can do it safely.
We encourage early applications as we review on a daily basis.
