The role is suitable for PGY3+ junior medical staff seeking more experience in any of the critical care areas. This includes JMOs planning to apply to ACEM, RACGP, and ACRRM registrars and JMOs still working out which of the Critical Care specialties is for them.

Where you'll be working

Tamworth is a city of 60,000 with a great selection of pubs and cafes. We are part of the Hunter New England Local Health District which stretches from the NSW coast to the Queensland border. Come and have a true rural experience without giving up access to shopping, dining, and a great night out. There is an abundance of local sporting teams and clubs as well as numerous other social activities to keep you busy.

We are the referral centre for the region providing trauma and critical care services for over 15 rural hospitals. The ED sees 45,000 presentations annually across a broad range of all specialties and age groups. ICU is a 12-bed unit including a four-bed HDU and admits approximately 950 patients a year of which 30% are ventilated. Both ED and ICU receive patients from rural sites retrieved by the local Westpac Helicopter Retrieval Service which has a base in Tamworth. Critical Care Unaccredited Trainees/ SRMOs can complete ACEM’s Emergency Medicine Certificate over the year. ED is accredited with RACGP and ACRRM for advanced skills in Emergency Medicine.

If you are looking for a Critical Care SRMO experience with high exposure to acute patient care including procedures and clinical decision making combined with supportive senior medical and nursing staff, this is the job for you!

What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of the SRMO in the Emergency Department is to provide clinical care, under appropriate supervision, to patients requiring emergency medical services in a complex clinical environment. This position will provide experience in a critical care environment and have responsibilities and opportunities for autonomous practice commensurate with the level of experience of the incumbent.

Rotations to anaesthetics and ICU are available with all rotations accredited by the relevant specialist College. This position meets the ED placement requirement for selection into the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) training program and the Provisional Training / Training Stage 1 requirements of the ACEM training program.

The position is suitable for trainees of other specialties seeking critical care experience including RACGP and ACRRM trainees and supports the completion of the Emergency Medicine Certificate (EMC) and Emergency Medicine Diploma (EMD) through ACEM. It is also suitable for those who are not enrolled in a training program with regular protected education and professional development support provided to all Unaccredited Trainees.

-
Critical Care rotations will be offered to the top 4 successful applicants. All other successful applicants will be offered 24months of Emergency Medicine.
