Operations Manager - Quarry and Factory Operations
Operations Manager – Quarry and Factory Operations
Senior Operations role managing a Sand Processing Site and a FMCG packaging factory. This role leads a diverse range of pumping, screening and packaging equipment across two manufacturing sites (quarrying/sand processing and Townsville/Brisbane packaging).
The Company
River Sands Pty Ltd is a vertically integrated manufacturer of packaged mortars, cements and speciality sands. Established for 50 years, its manufacturing operations include a Sand Quarry and blending facility; a large dry-mix concrete, mortars, cement and sands packing facility at Carbrook; and a smaller factory in Townsville. The company forms part of an Australian owned family business conglomerate with interests in reinforcing steel, ready-mixed concrete, a cement terminal, sand and hard rock quarries, and a leading supplier of colours and coatings for Precast and Ready Mixed Concrete producers around Australia. The business has an active product development and marketing focus and seeks opportunities for growth.
The Role
This leadership role provides the management resource to expand output, broaden the product range and explore new investment opportunities. Reporting to and acting as 2IC to the General Manager Operations, the role heads quarrying and sand/soil processing activities, and provides oversight of the Townsville and Brisbane concrete packaging factory operations.
The primary focus is leading the team to produce graded sands, organic blends and soils on a recently upgraded dredging and classifying plant. The site spans 50 acres and is supplied by a sand dredging operation located one kilometre away. The team optimises the operation of booster stations and an automated wet classifying plant to split sand into three sizes, which is sold or blended with soils using mobile screening plants for a diversified customer base. Traffic management on a busy site is also part of the remit. In addition to quarrying, you will act as 2IC to the GM in running the factories, with oversight of the Townsville facility and support to the Brisbane operation.
The two factories include multiple packing lines and substantial raw material storage. The business is in the final stage of a six-year factory upgrade and expansion programme.
To be successful in this role you will require:
* An Engineering, Advanced Trade qualification, or quarrying experience
* Strong planning and management skills to optimise output of multiple production lines
* A solid understanding of Lean with a track record of continuous improvement
* A strong record of improving safety and embedding relevant management systems
* Experience operating a wide range of processing, pumping, screening and automatic packing equipment
* A track record of achieving good engineering outcomes through engagement with maintenance teams and functions
* Good commercial acumen
* An assertive and fair leadership style aligned with a family-owned business
* An opportunistic and enquiring mindset to develop new products and markets
As a key leader in a diverse manufacturing business, the role offers variety, challenge and the opportunity to apply management, commercial acumen and engineering knowhow to expand operational and product range scope. Exposure to leading European packing and processing equipment is anticipated. The successful candidate will join a growing business at an exciting development stage with a culture typical of a family business: work smart, make quick decisions, and treat colleagues with respect. An attractive remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
