Offer description

A leading organisation in the infrastructure sector is seeking a Senior Asset Engineer to join their team in Mackay. This is an exceptional opportunity for you to play a pivotal role in optimising critical assets across their lifecycle, ensuring they deliver reliable service while meeting environmental, sustainable, and safety standards.

The organisation values flexibility, professional growth, and offers the chance to work on high-value infrastructure projects that are essential to the region's economic success. If you are passionate about engineering excellence, sustainability, and making a tangible difference through your expertise, this role provides the platform for you to thrive.

* Be at the forefront of strategic asset management for significant marine and port infrastructure, influencing long-term planning and operational excellence.
* Enjoy flexible working opportunities and access to ongoing training and development within a supportive environment that encourages knowledge sharing and collaboration.
* Work alongside a knowledgeable team where your input shapes major projects, fosters innovation in asset optimisation, and supports sustainable outcomes for communities.
What you'll do:

As a Senior Asset Engineer based in Mackay, you will be entrusted with overseeing the full spectrum of asset management responsibilities for vital marine and port infrastructure. Your day-to-day will involve collaborating closely with internal teams as well as external partners such as government agencies and contractors. You will champion best practices in inspection regimes, data‐driven decision‐making, budget oversight, project delivery from concept through completion—including contract administration—and stakeholder engagement. Your ability to foster teamwork while nurturing talent within your group will be crucial as you guide others towards achieving shared objectives. Success in this position means not only maintaining but enhancing the performance of critical assets through sustainable practices that balance commercial returns with community benefit. You will also play an integral part in shaping future capital works by contributing expert advice into CAPEX planning processes.

* Provide strategic asset management leadership for an allocated group of assets, ensuring all activities align with organisational goals and regulatory requirements.
* Develop and manage comprehensive asset management systems in accordance with industry best practice, supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
* Conduct detailed engineering inspections, audits, and investigations of assets to ensure compliance, suitability, and optimal condition for service delivery.
* Design and implement robust monitoring regimes to capture, interpret, and distribute asset data for enhanced decision‐making across the asset lifecycle.
* Lead the delivery of engineering projects including contract management for infrastructure repairs and maintenance valued up to $10M or more.
* Manage external consultants, contractors, and service providers throughout project lifecycles to achieve objectives related to timeframes, cost efficiency, quality standards, scope control, benefits realisation, and risk mitigation.
* Develop and oversee maintenance budgets for assigned assets to maximise value for money over their useful life while supporting future planning needs.
* Ensure all work activities obtain necessary development approvals and are conducted in line with approval conditions including compliance with monitoring regimes and notification processes.
* Act as Key User for the OnePort system by supporting asset management modules and driving continuous improvement with IT teams and other key users.
* Mentor engineers, technical officers, and maintenance personnel by providing guidance, supervision, and support within the Infrastructure & Operations team.
What you bring:

To excel as a Senior Asset Engineer you will bring proven experience managing complex infrastructure portfolios within marine or port environments. Your background includes hands‐on involvement with lifecycle planning for large‐scale assets—particularly those constructed from steel or concrete—and you are adept at balancing technical rigour with practical problem‐solving. You possess strong project management acumen covering everything from cost estimation through contract administration. Your interpersonal skills enable you to build trust‐based relationships across multidisciplinary teams while guiding less experienced colleagues towards professional growth. A commitment to sustainability underpins your approach as does your capacity for clear communication when engaging stakeholders or representing organisational interests at forums. Registration as an RPEQ is required; additional qualifications such as chartership or postgraduate certification (e.g., PMP/PRINCE2) are advantageous. Experience navigating regulatory frameworks relevant to ports—including development approvals—is highly valued.

* Degree qualification in engineering (civil, structural or coastal) with substantial experience in port industry environments including exposure to marine or coastal engineering.
* Mandatory RPEQ registration; chartership with Engineers Australia is highly desirable.
* Demonstrated expertise in strategic asset management including lifecycle planning for steel/concrete structures such as roads, utilities or seawalls—structural experience on both landside and marineside assets is highly regarded.
* Proven track record conducting inspections/investigations of complex assets with a focus on durability and regulatory compliance.
* Experience managing infrastructure construction projects from inception through completion—preferably within marine settings—and providing effective engineering supervision throughout.
* Advanced skills in project management including cost estimation, tendering processes, contract negotiation/administration as well as stakeholder engagement at multiple levels.
* Ability to apply analytical thinking to generate practical solutions for diverse engineering challenges while taking responsibility for outcomes.
* Leadership capabilities demonstrated through mentoring staff or contractors; fostering empowerment; motivating teams towards excellence in customer service delivery.
* Experience working independently with minimal supervision while organising workflows efficiently to meet deadlines without compromising quality outcomes.
* Excellent communication skills enabling you to consult/negotiate effectively with internal/external clients both verbally and in writing; ability to maintain confidentiality is essential.
