Role
The Mental Health Practitioners (MHP) initiative expands mental health and wellbeing support across government school campuses. This position delivers mental health prevention, promotion, and early intervention services within an educational environment, with minimal supervision and high autonomy.
Responsibilities
* Enhance school-wide mental health prevention and promotion activities; contribute to whole‐school health and wellbeing plans; build the capability of teaching staff and school leadership.
* Provide early intervention services, including short‐term counselling, for individual students and groups at risk or with mild to moderate mental health concerns.
* Coordinate supports for students with complex needs both within and external to the school; liaise with local mental health service providers and other health professionals.
* Advise and support teachers and wellbeing staff to build capacity to improve students' wellbeing, learning and developmental outcomes.
* Plan and implement evidence‐based intervention strategies for students with complex needs, collaborating with families and external agencies.
* Liaise with department areas and external providers to provide appropriate support to students.
* Maintain professional competence and ongoing professional development throughout the year.
* Meet relevant policies and legislative requirements regarding student health information, privacy and consent.
Selection Criteria
* Ability to implement a range of small group and whole‐school mental health prevention and promotion activities.
* Demonstrated ability to input into the development, implementation and evaluation of mental health and wellbeing prevention, promotion and early intervention processes and strategies.
* Experience in assessing, conceptualising and analysing wellbeing issues and providing evidence‐based direct counselling support.
* Experience coordinating supports for young people with complex needs and making referrals to specialist services.
* Highly developed communication, networking and interpersonal skills.
* Clear understanding of legislative requirements regarding privacy of health information.
Qualifications
* Qualified as a psychologist, social worker, mental health nurse, occupational therapist or counsellor of a prescribed class.
* Full registration with AHPRA for psychologists, mental health nurses, occupational therapists, and for mental health nurses a postgraduate qualification in mental health; membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers for social workers; practitioner membership with ACA or PACFA for counsellors.
* Demonstrated direct counselling experience.
* Current Working With Children Check.
* Specialisation in educational or developmental psychology for psychologists; holding a Mental Health Nurse Credential and membership with the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses for mental health nurses; membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers and an Accredited Social Worker Trade Mark for social workers; a Better Access to Mental Health Endorsement for occupational therapists; Level 3‐4 registration (ACA) or a Registered Clinical Counsellor endorsement (PACFA) for counsellors.
