Be Part of Our Team: Deliver High-Quality Emergency Care in a Rural Community

About us

The Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) offers medical clinicians the opportunity to thrive in a dynamic, highly supportive regional health network. With more than 5,000 dedicated staff working across 33 public hospitals - including two major Base Hospitals, eight Acute Community Hospitals, and 16 Multi‑Purpose Services - MLHD is a progressive organisation known for innovation, compassion, and excellence in patient care.

Serving a diverse population of approximately 245,000 people across 125,561 square kilometres, MLHD provides clinicians with unparalleled scope to expand their clinical practice, manage a wide variety of presentations, and make meaningful impacts in both small rural communities and larger regional centres. Stretching from the Snowy Mountains in the east to the plains of Hillston in the northwest - and along the Victorian border - MLHD offers not only remarkable clinical breadth, but also the lifestyle benefits of working in one of Australia’s most scenic and welcoming regions.

What you'll be doing

As a Visiting Medical Officer – General Practice Emergency Medicine, you will provide high-quality, patient-centred emergency medical care at Tumut Hospital. Working as part of a multidisciplinary rural healthcare team, you will deliver contemporary emergency assessment and treatment, including basic and advanced resuscitation, trauma management, and acute medical care.

You will support the local community and fellow GP VMOs through sessional Emergency Department shifts, with responsibilities that may include inpatient management, clinical leadership on shift, supervision and education of junior clinicians, and coordination of patient retrievals and referrals where required. There may also be opportunities to provide services at other MLHD facilities, subject to credentialing.

In accepting this position, you will uphold core NSW public sector values, including cultural diversity, equity, ethical practice, and contributing to a healthy, safe, and fair workplace.

Where you'll be working

Tumut Hospital is a key rural health service supporting the Tumut community and surrounding Snowy Valleys region. The hospital provides emergency, acute inpatient, outpatient and community-based services, playing a vital role within the MLHD network.

Tumut offers an enviable lifestyle with access to the Snowy Mountains, national parks, rivers, and outdoor recreation, while still being within reasonable distance of Canberra and Wagga Wagga. The region is known for its strong community spirit, affordable living, excellent schools and family-friendly environment—making it an ideal location for clinicians seeking professional fulfilment and work-life balance.

Incentives

MLHD provides remuneration consistent with NSW Health statewide awards and determinations. Clinicians may also benefit from regional incentives, salary packaging opportunities, and flexible working arrangements designed to attract high quality medical practitioners to rural practice.

The Welcome Experience
