We are seeking suitability qualified candidates to establish an Australian bureau of world-class journalists with experience is GENERAL NEWS, SPORTS and ENTERTAINMENT to help expand our digital coverage.
The right candidates will be either:
—An enterprising journalist who can find, report and write eye-catching stories
—A sharp writer who can deliver clean, vibrant copy in our signature styles
—An experienced senior editor with experience in a major breaking news operation who can manage production and publishing of digital content, working with a team to package each story with headlines and visuals (photos and multi-media) that are unique to our brand
To succeed in our environment, you must be a self-starter with a lot of drive, and full of ideas.
You are the kind of person who's willing to work the phones, comb through lawsuits and documents, attend press conferences, ask tough questions, and do whatever else it takes to find and nail the story.
To wit, candidates with experience in a major breaking newsroom environments, a portfolio of exclusives or opinion writing, and a huge passion for the news, sport and entertainment industries should ONLY apply for these roles.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
—Write clean and vibrant SEO-optimised copy that is fun and entertaining
—Develop longer enterprise pieces as needed
—Ability to brainstorm, collate ideas and thoroughly report them out
—Ability to spot viral stories or a compelling angle not covered by other publications and the ability to re-work a local story with a national angle
—Strong news gathering skills and able to work in a digital-first environment
—An understanding of how to navigate court documents, the inner workings of local authorities and how to simply explain complex issues
—A strong roster of contacts and sources
—Flexibility to work some nights and weekends as required
Senior Editor candidates:
—A minimum of three to five years of experience in a major breaking news operation
—Assign and edit stories to a team of other writers/contributors
—Ability to think strategically about the daily news cycle and manage ongoing coverage of trending stories
—Program homepage, ensuring a balance of the most important, interesting, and attention-grabbing stories of the moment
—Use analytics-driven decision making in selecting content
—Assist with breaking news, including social amplification sending out push notifications
—Work with social, photo, and other departments seamlessly to better enhance our coverage
—Collaborate with leaders across internal editorial departments
QUALIFICATIONS:
—Exceptional skill set in editing, writing, or reporting
—Deep understanding of the news, sport and entertainment/pop culture space and a network of established contacts
—News judgment, excellence in time management and confidence multitasking is a must
—Comfortable multitasking and working in a fast-paced online news environment
—Experience using content management systems, photo editing software and web analytics tools
—Knowledge of SEO best practices and social trends
—Flexibility to work some nights and weekends as required
