This is a high-profile opportunity to lead a portfolio responsible for foundational systems that support sustainable growth, strong governance and thriving communities across the state.
With more than 800 staff across 30 locations, the Department works tirelessly to ensure that Queensland's communities, businesses, and water resources thrive. DLGWV delivers services across three core portfolios:
* Local Government Governance and Funding– Supporting an empowered and sustainable local government sector through legislative and regulatory reform, governance advice, sustainability capacity building and administration of funding programs.
* Water Infrastructure and Resource Management– Overseeing water infrastructure and resource management to ensure safe, reliable, and affordable water supplies across Queensland.
* Volunteering– Leading policy and partnerships to grow and strengthen Queensland’s volunteer sector.
What You’ll Lead
As Director-General of the Department, you will lead a diverse and high-impact portfolio that contributes to the strength, sustainability, and liveability of Queensland communities. Reporting directly to the Minister and accountable to the Premier, the Director-General provides strategic leadership across the three distinct service areas.
This is a significant leadership opportunity with state-wide reach and a substantial portfolio budget. You will shape policy, deliver services, and drive reform to ensure the department’s operations are responsive, future-focused, and aligned with Queensland’s broader public sector priorities.
Key responsibilities include:
* Creating an environment where the Local Government sector is empowered, including through fit for purpose legislation
* Ensuring local government is held to high levels of integrity and accountability, while enabling Councillors to serve their community without unnecessary regulatory burden
* Focusing on delivering generational water infrastructure across Queensland that will secure supply and foster economic growth
* Addressing future water requirements for further population growth
* Implementing the recommendations from the Parliamentary Inquiry into Breaking Down Barriers to Volunteering to drive up participation rates and improve opportunities for the volunteer workforce
* Ensure efficient departmental governance, administration and operation of more than 800 staff across 30+ locations.
Who We’re Seeking
You are a visionary and collaborative executive, capable of navigating complexity and leading with purpose in a diverse, multi-faceted department. You bring a track record of delivering impactful outcomes in infrastructure, place-based services or community and economic development. With a strategic mindset, you are known for building trust across complex stakeholder environments and driving sustainable change.
You will bring:
* Executive experience leading large and geographically dispersed teams
* A demonstrated ability to lead reform, drive policy innovation and deliver complex infrastructure or community-focused programs
* Strong financial and organisational acumen, with experience managing significant budgets and delivering results
* High-level stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence across government, industry and the community
* A commitment to integrity, transparency and strong governance.
