Position: Legal Advisor - DRR Governance & Compliance

About the Don River Railway: The Don River Railway (DRR), operated by The Van Diemen Light Railway Society Inc., is a beloved heritage railway and a premier tourist attraction in Tasmania, dedicated to recreating living railway history. As we undergo significant transformation and pursue major expansion projects, sound legal advice is crucial for ensuring robust governance, navigating complex regulatory landscapes, and protecting the organisation's interests.

The Opportunity — We are seeking a qualified and experienced Legal Advisor to volunteer their expertise in supporting DRR's Board and management. This is a crucial strategic role for someone with a strong understanding of legal principles, excellent analytical skills, and a passion for contributing to a community-focused heritage organisation. You will provide invaluable guidance on a range of legal matters, helping to ensure DRR operates within legal frameworks and mitigates risks.

Key Responsibilities & Duties:

* Provide legal advice and guidance on matters related to DRR's operations, governance, contracts, and compliance.
* Assist in reviewing and drafting legal documents, agreements, and policies.
* Advise on compliance with relevant legislation, including corporate law, rail safety law, employment law, and not-for-profit regulations.
* Support the Board in understanding legal risks and developing mitigation strategies.
* Potentially assist with intellectual property, land use agreements, or other specific legal matters as they arise.
* Collaborate closely with the Board (especially the President and Secretary) and other functional leads.
* Adhere strictly to professional ethical standards and DRR's confidentiality policies.
* Contribute to fostering a culture of sound governance and risk awareness.

Training: Mandatory induction. Orientation to DRR's Constitution, Delegations Manual, and key projects.
