About The Role
You will support inpatients of the John Hunter Children's Hospital receiving treatment or attending an outpatient clinic for treatment or follow up care. Psychological therapy is often about supporting adjustment to an acute or chronic health condition, and support for already existing developmental, behavioural or psychological concerns complicating recovery from a medical condition.
You will be supported by psychosocial members of the oncology and haematology team, including child life therapists and social workers. The psychology team are a supportive group and there is is opportunity for supervision from a range of psychologists who have extensive experience working within the Children, Young People and Families service. You will have access to individual and group supervision, as well as extensive professional developmental opportunities through the Health Education and Training Institute. You will have access to the state health collective of psychologists working with clients who have cancer.
Most of our allied health staff work an 8:00 – 4:30 day, although there is flexibility in setting your work hours.
Where You'll Be Working
You will be working within the Psychology Department of the John Hunter Children's Hospital. This is a dynamic workplace, where you will support clients who have cancer or a blood disorder. You will interact with a variety of medical teams within the Children's Hospital.
You will have the opportunity to work within our skilled multi-disciplinary team, collaborating with other highly skilled medical staff and allied health clinicians. You will work alongside colleagues from Social Work and Child Life Therapy.
About You
Our ideal candidate will enjoy working within a team environment. You will enjoy working with young people across the age span from toddlers and their caregivers to adolescents. You will need to be able to discern the best timing for psychological intervention during an extended and at times intensive treatment protocol for serious illness. You would understand that clients can experience invasive medical procedures that impact upon their well-being. The candidate would work with the knowledge that some young people have terminal conditions.
Requirements
* Current registration as a Psychologist with Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
* Completion of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council accredited postgraduate clinical psychology qualification of no less than two years full time duration or recognised equivalent, displayed on the Psychology Board of Australia website.

* To be eligible for permanent employment in this position you must be an Australian Citizen, or a permanent resident of Australia, or a New Zealand citizen with a current New Zealand Passport. Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable local candidate is identified for the position; in this instance, you may only be offered employment in line with the conditions and expiry date of your visa.
