About the Role
The Solicitor will play a leading role in managing and delivering high-level legal services across the migration and administrative law practice.
The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3–4 years’ post-admission experience as a Solicitor, with demonstrable expertise in Judicial Review litigation.
Given PLAYFAIR’s strong presence in offshore jurisdictions, including Nauru, prior experience or a strong willingness to engage in such jurisdictions is highly desirable.
The role requires excellent case management skills, client advocacy, and the ability to supervise and mentor junior lawyers and migration agents.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as instructing solicitor in Judicial Review matters before the Federal Circuit and Federal Court, including cases arising from offshore processing jurisdictions (notably Nauru).
- Manage complex migration and humanitarian casework, including statutory interpretation and preparation of high-level submissions.
- Draft and lodge court documents, affidavits, and prepare written legal advice in Judicial Review and related proceedings.
- Liaise with Counsel, clients, and external stakeholders to advance case strategy.
- Supervise and mentor junior solicitors, Immigration Lawyers, and Registered Migration Agents in legal drafting, research, and case preparation.
- Prepare and manage offshore casework logistics, including travel to Nauru where required.
- Maintain accurate and confidential client records using LEAP Migration Manager and other systems.
- Contribute to professional development initiatives, including delivery of CPDs and information sessions.
Skills and Experience
- 3-4 years’ post-admission experience as a Practising Solicitor.
- Demonstrated experience as instructing solicitor in Judicial Review litigation and administrative law.
- Current Unrestricted Practising Certificate issued by the Law Society of NSW.
- Strong legal drafting, research, and advocacy skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including client management.
- Ability to supervise and mentor junior legal staff.
- Previous experience in offshore jurisdictions (e.g., Nauru) or willingness to travel.
- Experience working in complex migration and humanitarian law matters.
- Familiarity with LEAP Migration Manager or similar practice management software.
