As a Senior Technical Officer, you will be involved in providing technical support for multidisciplinary research, development and extension projects. These projects are primarily in the area of beef cattle systems (reproduction, genetics, nutrition).
Operating from the Extensive Livestock Systems workgroup within Animal Science, Agri-Science Queensland, you will provide technical support for multidisciplinary research, development and extension projects, focusing on beef cattle systems (reproduction, genetics, nutrition), grazing land production systems, silvo‐pastoralism, land resource assessment and improving and developing the feedbase for improved and native pasture grazing systems.
These projects are conducted on the Brian Pastures Research Facility (RF) as well as commercial co‐operator properties in Queensland.
The Opportunity
* Take a leadership role in delivering the experimental aspects of all Animal Science projects conducted on site and in the local region, including planning, organising, designing, maintaining, conducting and reporting the experimental aspects of research projects with minimal supervision.
* Liaise with DPI and collaborating scientists, other technical and extension staff, research facility staff and grazier co‐operators to conduct and service project activities efficiently.
* Lead the technical team based at Brian Pastures RF through coordinating workflow processes across all research projects. Manage responsibilities and ensure accountability across all technical staff and take responsibility for the quality of output of the work unit.
* Support and participate in delivery of extension activities occurring in the region.
* Maintain Brian Pastures RF's 'research ready' status for Animal Science projects through actively participating as a member of a multidisciplinary team, building effective working relationships with project team members, stakeholders and Departmental staff.
* Be aware of, adhere to and promote strict animal welfare and safe work practices, including operating in remote environments.
What We Are Looking For
* Diploma or equivalent qualification in Applied Science, Rural Science or a similar field relevant to the position from a recognised tertiary institution.
* Commitment to obtaining vaccination or provision of evidence of prior immunity to Q fever will be required prior to starting.
Desirable Attributes
* Industry Understanding:
o Understanding of the Queensland and/or Northern Australia beef industry.
* Physical and Environmental Demands:
o Willingness to undertake physically demanding fieldwork in hot, sometimes wet, humid environments, and at relatively remote, isolated properties in accordance with WHS policies and procedures.
* Travel and Flexibility:
o Flexibility to undertake occasional travel to other locations with overnight stays.
