MCi Carbon is an Australian based global clean tech shaping the new circular economy by reimaging carbon. The University of Newcastle Research Associates Limited (TUNRA) is a subsidiary (Controlled Entity) of the University of Newcastle. TUNRA has a long history of service excellence and industry engagement, delivering a range of services to customers both in Australia and overseas since its establishment in 1969. The strength of the TUNRA operating model has been in its ability to engage directly with industry and government to provide research services.

Together the two companies have been working on research and scale up of mineral carbonation technology at the University of Newcastle (UoN) for over 11 years. As part of this collaboration, a pilot plant facility has been built and is in operation at the Newcastle Institute of Energy and Resources (NIER).

Due to the company's growth, we are seeking a Product Development Engineer to research, develop and optimise materials—particularly supplementary cementitious materials for cement and concrete applications and carbonates for industrial applications —supporting MCi Carbon’s projects and sustainability objectives. The role requires rigorous scientific analysis, collaboration, and adherence to safety, quality, and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities for the Role:

Research and develop innovative supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and carbonates to support MCI Carbon’s sustainability goals

Design and conduct laboratory experiments to evaluate material performance under various conditions

Characterise raw materials and SCMs using advanced analytical techniques (e.g. XRD, XRF, SEM-EDS, BET, TGA/DSC, particle size analysis)

Assess pozzolanic reactivity, hydraulic behaviour, and compatibility with cementitious systems

Analyse data, prepare technical reports, and provide evidence-based recommendations

Advise project teams on material selection and application to optimise outcomes

Maintain accurate records in line with data security protocols

Ensure compliance with WHS legislation and internal safety standards

Mentor junior staff and contribute to a collaborative, safety-focused research environment

Stay current with industry developments and uphold strict confidentiality of proprietary information

Required experience and skills:

Min. 3 years' experience in materials characterisation, product development, and lab-based research

Proficient in analytical techniques and data interpretation

Strong problem-solving, analytical, and project management skills

Excellent written and verbal communication, including technical reporting and presentations

Proactive approach to WHS and safety protocols

Able to work independently and collaboratively in cross-functional teams

Background in carbon capture, utilisation, or mineral carbonation tech

Familiarity with Agile methodology in R&D settings

Experience in cement/concrete development and testing to Australian/international standards

Required Qualifications:

Tertiary qualification (minimum Bachelor's; Master’s or PhD preferred) in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field

How to Apply:

Please submit your CV and a cover letter detailing your experience and suitability for the role directly through the SEEK to the attention of Debbie Price – HR Manager. Applications close 20 July 2025.

To be eligible for employment you must be in Australia on a visa with work rights or be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
