The role

As a Senior Urban Designer, you'll provide expert urban design advice and deliver high‐quality, design‐led outcomes across strategic, statutory and place‐based projects. Working across multidisciplinary teams, you'll play a key role in shaping city growth through strong design thinking, technical expertise, and collaborative delivery. This is a temporary full‐time role until April 2028.

You'll support design excellence initiatives, contribute to improved placemaking and community outcomes, and help embed sustainable, people‐centred design principles across projects. In addition, you'll mentor and guide less experienced team members, helping to build capability within the Urban Design Team and the broader organisation.

* Deliver high‐quality senior urban design advice across strategic, statutory and place‐based projects, contributing to design‐led planning and city‐shaping outcomes
* Prepare master plans, spatial frameworks, urban design studies and public domain strategies to inform Council's planning and development decisions
* Provide expert input on planning proposals, precinct planning, State Significant Developments and Council‐led projects, ensuring alignment with design objectives and policies
* Develop, review and implement built‐form controls, design guidelines and development provisions supporting planning instruments such as LEPs and DCPs
* Assess development applications and planning proposals, including preparing urban design referrals and providing expert advice, and appear as an expert witness when required
* Project manage urban design projects, including preparing briefs, coordinating consultants, and delivering outcomes on time and within budget
* Produce high‐quality urban design documentation, including mapping, graphics, 3D modelling and scenario testing to support analysis and communication
* Support Design Review Panel processes and respond to panel recommendations through planning assessments
* Collaborate with internal teams and engage with external stakeholders, government agencies and the community to support integrated project delivery and informed decision‐making
* Mentor and support less experienced team members, contributing to capability building and maintaining high design standards
* Stay informed of contemporary urban design trends, tools and best practice, and apply these to improve Council outcomes
* Work in accordance with Council governance, policies and quality standards, contributing to the objectives of the City Strategy and Design Unit and undertaking after‐hours duties as required

You will have
* Tertiary qualifications in Urban Design, Urbanism or a related field (e.g. Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning)
* At least 6 years' post‐graduate experience in urban design or a related discipline, operating at a senior level
* Strong knowledge of the NSW planning system, including LEPs, DCPs and development assessment processes
* Demonstrated experience across placemaking, urban renewal and built‐form design
* Proven ability to prepare master plans, design guidelines, built‐form controls and urban design policies
* Experience assessing development applications and planning proposals, with capability to provide expert advice and support Court matters where required
* Strong stakeholder engagement, negotiation and collaboration skills
* Excellent verbal, written and visual communication skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, CAD and 3D modelling tools (e.g. Giraffe, SketchUp)

Salary: $104,465 (Grade H, Step 1) + 12% super.
