Graduate Waste Management Engineer / Consultant
Full-time — Metro Melbourne / Hybrid | Built Environment & Sustainability
Start your career contributing to smarter, more sustainable cities.
Leigh Design is a specialist consultancy delivering clear, efficient and compliance-focused waste management advice and the preparation of Waste Management Plans for urban developments across Australia. With over 17 years of experience, we work closely with Councils, developers, architects, town planners, builders and project managers in guiding high-performing sustainable waste management outcomes across a wide range of building types.
We’re entering an exciting new chapter – one that places greater focus on circular thinking, innovation, and environmental leadership. We’re looking for a graduate or early-career consultant to join our team. You might have experience in environmental science, sustainability, planning, engineering or design – or simply a strong interest in helping shape the future of the built environment. Experience in waste isn’t essential; we’ll provide training and support to the right candidate. If you’re eager to apply your skills in a meaningful field and learn from experienced consultants, this is a great opportunity to grow.
THE ROLE
Key tasks and responsibilities:
* Support the preparation of Waste Management Plans for a range of projects: residential, commercial, mixed-use, and more
* Assist in analysing drawings, policy requirements and site conditions
* Help estimate waste volumes and recommend practical solutions
* Learn to assess spatial and access layouts for function and compliance
* Contribute to documentation and client-facing reporting
* Gain exposure to the planning process and frameworks
* Work alongside experienced professionals in a collaborative environment.
You’re well suited to the role if you:
* Have a degree or diploma in Environmental Science, Urban Planning, Sustainability, Architecture, Design or a related field
* Have a genuine interest in environmental performance, circularity and best-practice outcomes
* Possess strong communication skills and attention to detail
* Have some experience working with architectural drawings, plans or technical documentation and/or working with architects and designers (preferred but not essential)
* Are willing to learn about waste policy and planning requirements across different Australian states and territories
* Are eager to grow in a supportive, team-based consultancy environment
* Value the environment and want to contribute to positive change – just as the rest of our team does!
Flexibility and support:
Hybrid working is on offer for this role, allowing for a combination of in-office and remote working. We work to a flexible effective 80-hour working fortnight, meaning you have flexibility around working 9 or 10 days per fortnight. This flexibility extends to the hours you work each day, as well as your start and finish times – all to support you in more harmoniously blending work with other areas of your life.
