Cape York Land Council (CYLC) is the native title representative body for Cape York. Over the past 32 years, CYLC has successfully pursued the recognition of Aboriginal land rights and native title and led innovative reform on the Cape. This includes supporting native title groups in negotiations with various stakeholders, implementation of comprehensive land use agreements, and strengthening the capacity of prescribed bodies corporate throughout our region. CYLC is looking for talented and motivated individuals to work within our high-performing Cairns-based Native Title Unit. Positions include Paralegal, Law Graduate, Legal Officer and/or Senior Legal Officer.
Paralegal, Graduate Law Clerk, Legal Officer, Senior Legal Officer - Native Title Unit
As a Paralegal, Law Graduate, Legal Officer or Senior Legal Officer, you will report to the Principal Legal Officer and will assist with the delivery of legal services for current and proposed native title claims and in relation to future act, mining, exploration, and cultural heritage matters. You will assist with facilitating agreement making between native title groups, government and other stakeholders, involving commercial complexity to provide funding streams, recognition of native title, and grants of tenure to native title holders. Within the scope of these roles, you may also be required to appear or otherwise assist other lawyers appearing in the Federal Court, Land Court and the National Native Title Tribunal.
The successful applicant/s will possess the following qualifications and/or professional experience:
* Successful completion or near completion of a law degree
* Eligibility to hold a practicing certificate in Queensland (for Legal Officer/Senior Legal Officer role)
* Exemplary written and verbal communication skills, with a focus on attention to detail
* Relationship building skills with clients and stakeholders, preferably in cross-cultural settings
* Willingness to engage with a range of different stakeholders in the course of negotiation and mediation
* Demonstrated ability to work in a high-pressure environment while managing competing priorities
* Excellent time management and organisational skills
* The ability to undertake regular travel throughout Cape York
* Holds a current driver’s license and is willing to undertake 4WD training
The Legal Officer role is suitable for someone with a minimum of 1-2 years’ post-admission experience (PAE) and applications from lawyers with greater PAE will be considered for the Senior Legal Officer Role. Recent law graduates who can demonstrate a strong interest in this sector are encouraged to apply. Experience in native title, cultural heritage, mining and exploration, property and/or commercial law is highly desirable, but not essential.
