Melton Specialist School is located in Melton VIC and provides educational programs for students with disabilities at both primary and secondary levels. The school has an enrolment of 405 students and focuses on staff wellbeing, flexible working arrangements, and onsite training in TEACCH and Behaviour Support.
The school introduced a Wellbeing Dog Programme in 2021. Bunji, the school dog, contributes to a positive community atmosphere through bus duty, school tours and walking excursions.
The environment includes traditional classrooms, specialist and vocational training spaces, therapy and sensory areas, natural gardens, outdoor sensory areas, playground equipment, sports facilities and covered walkways. The curriculum covers Arts, Literacy, Physical Education, Numeracy, Information Technology, Science and Life Skills, with senior students able to access VCAL or ASDAN programmes.
Selection Criteria
- Demonstrated knowledge of the relevant curriculum, including incorporating literacy and numeracy skills and responding to student learning needs.
- Experience in planning and implementing high‑impact teaching strategies, guided by student learning models, and evaluating their impact on student growth.
- Experience in monitoring and assessing student learning, using data to inform teaching practice and providing feedback to students and parents.
- Interpersonal and communication skills, establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with students, parents, colleagues and the broader community.
- Behaviours and attitudes consistent with Department values, with engagement in professional learning to continually improve teaching quality.
Role
The classroom teacher classification comprises two salary ranges. The primary focus is the planning, preparation and teaching of programs to achieve specific student outcomes, with critical reflection and inquiry to improve engagement.
Range 2 Classroom Teacher
- Responsible for a significant role in improving student performance and educational outcomes.
- Co‑develops and implements school policies and priorities.
- Supports staff learning and high‑quality instruction.
- Provides expert advice on content, processes and strategies for professional learning.
- Supervises and trains one or more student teachers.
- Assists staff to use student data to inform teaching approaches.
Range 1 Classroom Teacher
- Focuses on classroom management, subject content and teaching practice.
- Teaches individual classes and may supervise student teachers.
- Participates in policy development, project teams and co‑curriculum activities.
- Receives structured support, mentoring and guidance from higher‑level teachers.
- Engages in induction programs and professional learning to integrate curriculum, assessment and pedagogy.
Responsibilities
- Direct teaching of groups of students and individual students.
- Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of a curriculum area or other programme.
- Undertake other teaching and organisational duties as directed by the School Principal.
- Participate in parent/teacher meetings, staff meetings, camps and excursions.
- Undertake other non‑teaching supervisory duties.
Who May Apply
Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching qualified to teach and/or with demonstrated experience in the specified curriculum areas.

Qualification Requirements
- Provisional or full registration approved by the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
- Proficiency in Australian postgraduate initial teaching education or equivalent, as required.
- For graduates of Victorian ITE programmes after 1 July 2016, completion of the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) if not already satisfied.
