Hello network! It’s getting ever closer to Christmas time which I know most of us would think is time to slow down, but Defence never does! We have a unique prospect with one of our key Defence SME’s in Brisbane to support Electrical design, evaluation and integration for military vehicles with the option to work from home and utilise the Defence base as needed. Must have a current or reinstatable Defence clearance and be registered with Engineers Australia for electrical sign off. CPeng is encouraged or RPeng.
Role: Senior Electrical Design Engineer
Employment: Fixed‑term full‑time with option for part‑time. Remote option in place with travel as required to various military bases in Australia.
Key Tasks & Responsibilities
- Lead electrical engineering activities from concept through to production, ensuring projects meet technical, schedule, quality, and regulatory requirements.
- Act as the technical authority for electrical systems, providing guidance, mentoring, and review for other engineers.
- Champion best‑practice design methods, safety compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Prepare engineering documentation and deliverables for Systems Engineering Stage Gate reviews.
Design & Development
- Liaise with project and technical stakeholders ensuring capture and clarity of project requirements. Design and develop engineering & technical solutions for electrical systems including Power Distribution, Radio Frequency, Control Systems, Wiring Harnesses, and Electronic Subsystems. Prepare detailed design documentation including schematics, wiring diagrams, interface control documents, manufacturing drawings and bills of materials in accordance with customer requirements and IDES standards and quality procedures.
- Prepare / Approve / Lead system design Safety analysis, Maintainability analysis and QFD (trade off) analysis activities.
- Select components and materials to meet performance, environmental, and defence compliance requirements.
- Integrate electrical systems with mechanical and control systems (e.g. software) in a multi‑disciplinary environment.
- Coordinate and manage timely release of data / drawings / information to internal & external stakeholders.
- Prepare and review Contract Data Items, publication packages (UHB and EMEI) and work instructions.
- Lead benchmarking and technology analysis and provide direction / reports.
Compliance & Standards
- Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, such as AS/NZS electrical safety standards, MIL-STD, DEF(AUST), EMC/EMI requirements, and ISO 9001 quality systems.
- Support Defence and Government compliance documentation, including test plans, test procedures, verification tracking, verification reports, and configuration control.
Testing & Validation
- Develop and oversee test plans for prototypes and production systems.
- Manage product validation, environmental testing, and certification processes.
- Conduct troubleshooting, fault analysis, and corrective action for electrical issues.
- Attend site visits and equipment inspections as determined by project requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelors degree in engineering in either electrical, electronics, mechatronics or similar. Must be registered with Engineers Australia for electrical sign‑off and design authority.
- Australian Citizenship and a current or reinstatable Defence security clearance.
- Experience with electrical design for vehicle systems or military capability.
- CAD software modelling capability and ability to interpret complex wiring diagrams and drawings.
- A team attitude and willingness to support and train junior engineers as required.
- Some travel interstate on an infrequent basis.
