Where you'll be working

Belmont Hospital is a 150-bed acute facility with a busy Emergency Department, inpatient wards (CCU/COU, Medical, Surgical, Sub-Acute, Transition to Residential Aged Care - TRAC), 4 Operating Theatres, several Outpatient clinics, Pharmacy, on-site Imaging & Pathology and a Lakeview Detoxification Unit. We hold accreditation by several specialty Colleges (further information below) and are a teaching facility for the University of Newcastle’s Joint Medical Program.


Acute & Critical Care SRMOs

working at Belmont Hospital will be working in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) / Close Observation Unit (COU), with rotational opportunities in the Emergency Department, Anaesthetics & General Medicine departments. There may also be opportunities to spend some time in other critical care areas within Hunter New England LHD, as vacancies arise.


What you'll be doing

Provide medical services and gain supervised experience in the management of acutely ill patients in urban non-tertiary settings. This training occurs prior to undertaking accredited specialty training and will involve working in one or more acute areas of the hospital, such as:

* Coronary Care Unit (CCU) / Close Observation Unit (COU) – 8 bed unit with telemetry, non-invasive ventilation, short-term vasopressor capabilities; two Critical Care Overbed Network (CCON) cameras operational in the unit; supervision provided by on-site and/or on-call specialist consultants, and escalation pathways via Hunter Retrieval Services, John Hunter Hospital Cardiology and other sub-specialties.
* Emergency Department (ED) – approximately 30,000 presentations yearly and staffed by FACEMs, CMOs, Trainees, JMOs and Nurse Practitioners. The department holds ACEM accreditation for vocational training in Emergency Medicine.
* Anaesthetics Department – 4 operating theatres (case-mix including General Surgery, Orthopaedics, ENT, Urology, Plastics) with specialist anaesthetists rotating from John Hunter Hospital. The department holds ANZCA accreditation for vocational training in Rural Generalist Anaesthesia.
* General Medicine Department – four acute teams staffed by specialist physicians rotating from John Hunter Hospital, SRMOs and JMOs (all four terms accredited by HETI) – supported by on-site Advanced Trainees in Cardiology, Geriatrics and General Medicine. The department holds RACP accreditation for advanced training in General & Acute Care Medicine, and Geriatric Medicine.

Upon completion of the Acute & Critical Care SRMO year, doctors will be well positioned to apply for critical care specialty training (accredited or unaccredited) in Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Intensive Care. Doctors will also have acquired many transferable skills that would be useful in other training programs such as Medicine, General Practice and Rural Generalism.


While working under direct or indirect supervision (Specialist Consultants available either on-site or on-call 24/7) at Belmont Hospital, doctors will have opportunities to preference rotations/departments according to career-related aspirations. For example:

* Acute Care Stream – working in Close Observation Unit, ED & Acute General Medicine
* Critical Care Stream – working in Anaesthetics, Close Observation Unit & ED
* Mixed Acute & Critical Care Stream
* Demonstrated knowledge, skills, problem solving and attention to detail to the care of complex patients with recent experience in critical care settings (e.g. completion of ICU, ED or Anaesthetics terms). Skills or experience relating to the management of patients on non-invasive ventilation, arterial line and/or PICC line placement, and use of peripheral vasopressor medications will be looked upon favourably.
* Competency in, or planned enrolment in, the ALS-2 course (accredited by the Australian Resuscitation Council) and other critical‑care related courses (e.g. ICU BASIC Course, EMST, ATLS, APLS, etc.).
* Demonstrated motivation to take on, and complete new challenges, for example: a) Reflection and obtaining feedback to identify and pursue learning needs; b) Quality Improvement Projects to improve work processes, systems and services; c) Teaching, inspiring, supporting and mentoring others; d) Leadership and advocacy-related initiatives.
* Demonstrated high ability to communicate clearly and effectively with patients, families and other health professionals.
* A proven record of practicing medicine with a flexible, professional and compassionate attitude.
* Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
