Sydney Local Health District (SLHD) is seeking an experienced Staff Specialist in Developmental Paediatrics to join our team at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital
We are looking for a Staff Specialist in Developmental Paediatrics. The primary purpose of the role is to lead, undertake and support activities within the long-term developmental multi-disciplinary follow-up service, and to support clinical service delivery in the SLHD Healthy Beginnings Program. Integrating knowledge of these outcomes, together with a focus on developmental care practices and the First 2000 days framework into the Department through consults, research and education remains a key component of this role. The Service contributes follow up data to both the NSW and Australia/New Zealand neonatal networks, and as part of several national/international Neonatal ICU studies.
The Staff Specialist in Developmental Paediatrics in the Department of Newborn Care undertakes developmental assessments up-to the age of eight years in infants and at-risk patients born in SLHD. There is a multi-disciplinary outpatient clinic, with scope for some ambulatory care for priority population patient groups, whilst also leading a continued focus on developmental care practices for inpatients and families within Neonatal ICU.
The Staff Specialist in Developmental Paediatrics in the Department of Newborn Care will be responsible to the Head of Department, and will lead research, participate in supervision of paediatric trainees, teaching, quality improvement projects and administrative activities within the Department of Newborn Care.
In undertaking this role, the Staff Specialist will have demonstrated proficiency in undertaking standardised developmental and neurological assessments (including holding qualifications in standardised developmental assessments such as Bayley 4 or Griffith), and have knowledge of community based intervention services available within both the public and private sector. They may also hold qualifications in standardised infant neurological assessments (Hammersmith Neonatal and Infant Assessment) and/or General Movements assessments.
The Staff Specialist in Developmental Paediatrics in the Department of Newborn Care will ensure a high standard of professional performance and encouragement of an academic environment which supports education, research and professional development.
Medical practitioner, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Applicants must have Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) with recognised qualifications in either community paediatrics/or general paediatrics (or other equivalent specialist recognition) as provided for in the NSW Staff Specialists (State) Award, with demonstrated interest in developmental paediatrics.
Position is currently available. In addition, applicants expecting to be awarded their Fellowship within two months from the beginning of the 2026 Clinical Year on 2 February 2026, may be considered.
Salary and conditions are in accordance with the NSW Staff Specialist (State) Award.
