* We are looking for an experienced EL1 to join the leadership cohort of the Media team.

The Strategy, Performance and Engagement Division delivers strategic departmental services such as stakeholder engagement, governance, planning, reporting, risk management, media and communication, and crisis/emergency management. We provide support to the Minister, executive and business areas through advice on portfolio strategy, including developing, embedding and driving the department’s strategic purpose, objectives, priorities, vision and values. The Chief Strategy Officer leads the division, working across the department to embed and assure strategic capability, helping staff deliver our strategic priorities and to prepare for the future.
The Communication and Media Branch delivers integrated communication services to the department and our ministers’ offices. We partner to achieve business objectives and outcomes through evidence-based, integrated communication and media services for industry, community and business. This includes managing the department’s social media strategy and social media presence, media support services across the department and for our ministers’ offices, production services including graphic design and branding, Web publishing for external-facing departmental websites, and the development of campaign and non-campaign materials.
As a Public Affairs Officer Grand 3 (EL1 equivalent) you will join the leadership cohort of the Media team delivering high quality media and communication work to support the department.
This is where you play an important role.
As the Public Affairs Officer (PAO3), you will:
* Provide strategic media advice to support the department’s policies, programs and objectives.
* Develop and implement proactive media strategies that align with the objectives of the department, in addition to managing communication and media accounts for clients across the department.
* Respond to media inquiries and develop networks with key journalists and media outlets.
* Write and edit departmental and ministerial media releases and speeches.
* Write and edit communication material for a range of audiences and mediums to the highest professional standard.
* Provide leadership within the team, supervising and coaching other team members to develop their knowledge and experience.
* Build and sustain productive relationships with team members, colleagues and program areas to support the delivery of departmental priorities.
Please note that the merit pool established through this selection process, which is valid for a period of eighteen months from the date the vacancy was advertised in the Public Service Gazette, may also be used to fill future ongoing vacancies in the branch where the duties are of a similar nature.
Our ideal candidate will have:
* Demonstrated ability to deliver high quality contemporary media strategies and activities, identifying reputational risks and ensuring timely mitigation to protect brand and reputation
* Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor and motivate a small team with a diverse skillset to deliver high quality results.
* Demonstrated experience in building and sustaining productive relationships with the ability to negotiate confidently with a range of stakeholders, including ministers’ officers and senior executives.
* Demonstrated ability to drive performance to achieve outcomes in a fast paced and challenging environment
* Experience driving evidence-lead communication - monitor emerging communication and media issues, trends, and sentiment relevant to government and departmental priorities, and using this data to inform approach.
* Excellent organisational skills, including the ability to prioritise and complete a range of projects and activities within set timeframes.
* Experience negotiating with influence in order to achieve the best communication outcomes.
