The role
Role
The classroom teacher classification comprises two salary ranges—range1 and range2. The primary focus of the classroom teacher is on the planning, preparation and delivery of programs to achieve specific student outcomes. Classroom teachers engage in critical reflection and inquiry to improve their knowledge and skills, and, as they gain experience, contribute beyond the classroom.
Range2 classroom teachers play a significant role in improving student performance and educational outcomes, contributing to policy development and mentoring other teachers. They are expected to:
- Have the content knowledge and pedagogical practice to meet the diverse needs of all students.
- Model exemplary classroom practice and mentor/coach other teachers in critical reflection of their practice.
- Provide expert advice on content, processes and strategies that shape individual and school professional learning.
- Supervise and train one or more student teachers.
- Assist staff in using student data to inform teaching approaches that achieve targets for improving learning outcomes.
Range1 classroom teachers focus on further developing skills and competencies to become effective classroom practitioners. They are accountable for delivering their programs, participating in policy development, and may supervise student teachers under guidance.
Responsibilities
- Direct teaching of groups of students and individual students.
- Contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of a curriculum area or other curriculum program within the school.
- Undertaking other classroom teaching‐related and organisational duties as determined by the School Principal.
- Participating in activities such as parent/teacher meetings, staff meetings, camps and excursions.
- Undertaking other non‐teaching supervisory duties.
Selection Criteria
- Demonstrated knowledge of the relevant curriculum, including the ability to incorporate literacy and numeracy skills.
- Demonstrated experience in responding to student learning needs.
- Demonstrated experience in planning and implementing high‐impact teaching strategies, guided by how students learn, and evaluating their impact on learning growth.
- Demonstrated experience in monitoring and assessing student learning.
- Experience using data to inform teaching practice and providing feedback on student learning growth and achievement to students and parents.
- Interpersonal and communication skills; ability to establish collaborative relationships with students, parents, colleagues and the broader community.
- Behaviours and attitudes consistent with Department values.
- Reflective practice and engagement in professional learning to continually improve the quality of teaching.
Who May Apply
Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.
