The Department of Home Affairs is responsible for centrally coordinated strategy and policy leadership in relation to domestic national security arrangements, law enforcement, emergency management, counter-terrorism, social cohesion, the protection of our sovereignty, the integrity of our border and the resilience of our national infrastructure.

The Australian Border Force, an operationally independent body within the Department of Home Affairs, is Australia's frontline border law enforcement agency and Australia's customs service. The Australian Border Force's mission is to protect Australia's border and facilitate the legitimate movement of people and goods across it.

**Overview of the Branch and Section**:
The Data Services Branch is responsible for:

- Our data products which include statistical publications and customised statistics
- Our services include complex statistical analysis, clearance of statistics for external release and advice on available statistics as well as regular and ad hoc reporting services to a large number of internal and external users.

The Branch works closely with business areas to understand their data and analytical needs and the outcomes they are trying to achieve. Through provision of authoritative data and statistics, we support the Department's informed policy-making, program management and operational decision-making.

**Statistics and Reporting Section**:
The Statistics and Reporting Section (SARS) is responsible for delivery and maintenance of a wide range of data products including statistical publications and customised statistics as well as provision of data services such as clearance of statistics for external use and advice on available statistics to the Ministers' offices, program management and policy development areas at the Department.

**About the role**:

- Utilise technical expertise in the use of data, through a variety of programming languages, software and systems, to inform decision making, and policy and program outcomes
- Utilise exemplary levels of personal integrity, confidentiality and discretion, with conceptual and analytical skills to identify and drive business improvements
- Communicate and engage with stakeholders on complex issues and presents logical and compelling arguments about technical matters to technical and non-technical audiences.

You are a team member who works collaboratively, flexibly and pro-actively to achieve results. You have technical expertise, and a passion for the use of data to inform decision making, help improve policy and program outcomes.

You have demonstrated conceptual and analytical skills and the ability to identify and drive business improvements. As a member of a data product and service delivery team, you are a clear communicator who engages with stakeholders on issues and presents logical and compelling arguments about technical matters to non-technical audiences. You explain clearly what is being delivered and present your work professionally investigating and analysing any material inconsistencies. You will maintain secrecy and privacy.

**Specific duties/responsibilities**:

- Contribute to data products development and maintenance including build processes with a good understanding of underpinning data sources and available statistics published by other agencies e.g. Australian Bureau of Statistics
- Contribute to completing data related priorities while remaining as flexible as possible to meet urgent requests as required by Executives
- Analyse data requests, extract and manipulate data using reporting tools such as Structured Query Language (SQL) and BusinessObjects (BobJ) to produce data products that meet business requirements, satisfy Data Division quality standards and privacy principles.

**Role requirements/qualifications**:

- Demonstrable experience in working with large data sets using data interrogation tools such as advance Excel, SQL, BoBJ as well as good understanding of the Department's complex technology landscape and data assets in Connected Information Environment (CIE)
- Sound interpersonal skills and the ability to facilitate effective interactions with peers and customers
- Sound written and verbal communication skills
- Organise work, set priorities and complete tasks within set time frames and successfully manage competing priorities and changing time frames
