Queensland Cane Agriculture & Renewables (QCAR) is a grower representative body dedicated to advancing the interest of members. It promotes sustainable and profitable cane farming, supports technical innovation and research with a mandate to be an independent, unbiased advocate for growers and their communities. QCAR acts on members' behalf in dealings with sugar milling companies, government and community stakeholders across Far North Queensland, Herbert, Burdekin, Mackay/ Central and Northern NSW growing districts. Formed from a shared belief in independence, member accountability and with growing momentum and an expanded strategic vision, the QCAR Board seeks an experienced, values‑driven General Manager to lead its next phase of growth.
About the Role
Reporting to the Board, you will lead QCAR's operational and strategic work, as well as advocacy agenda, to protect grower interests. You will work closely with growers, industry partners and government to advance member interests while ensuring the organisation remains independent, credible and effective. In conjunction with the Board, you will develop and implement the strategic plan, prepare submissions, oversee delivery of member services, manage the daily operations and represent QCAR at industry and government forums. You are an engaging, business‑minded, hands‑on leader who thinks strategically, becomes deeply connected to members, industry and community and is passionate about the agricultural sector and how it benefits society generally.
Strategic Leadership & Governance
* Translate Board strategy into clear operational plans and measurable outcomes
* Provide high-quality advice, insight and reporting to the Board
* Strengthen governance, policies and internal controls
Grower Representation & Advocacy
* Be a trusted and visible advocate for members across all districts
* Lead engagement with milling companies, industry bodies and regulators
* Represent QCAR publicly on policy and industry matters
Stakeholder & Government Engagement
* Build strong relationships across local, state and federal government
* Position QCAR as a credible referral and advisory body for the industry
* Act as QCAR's primary spokesperson in media and forums
Operational & Financial Leadership
* Lead a small, committed team with clarity and purpose
* Oversee member services, contracts and organisational performance
* Manage budgets, financial reporting and long‑term sustainability
Growth, Renewables & Innovation
* Drive strategic growth opportunities beyond traditional sugar
* Explore bio‑energy and circular bio‑economy opportunities
* Develop partnerships that strengthen grower and community outcomes
About You
A confident, credible leader with strong judgement, the ability to navigate complex stakeholder environments, can lead from the front, communicate clearly and act with integrity is required. Your leadership experience in agriculture, agribusiness, renewables or a related sector and proven success working with Boards, members and government stakeholders will underpin your success. Strong advocacy, negotiation and relationship‑building capability combined with financial and commercial acumen and a deep appreciation of regional communities and grower‑led organisations are essential. Tertiary qualifications and governance/ company secretary experience will be an advantage.
