Intellischool is a rapidly growing ed‑tech start‑up providing beautiful, easy‑to‑use and insightful solutions to the education sector. Our products are used by leading K‑12 schools across Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan and South‑East Asia. We’re passionate about using data to improve learning, wellbeing and business operations for teachers, students and school leaders.
Lead AI‑Native Software Engineer role
This is a senior, hands‑on engineering role for someone who delivers production software at the pace AI now enables, and who has the judgement to do so without producing slop.
You will take ideas, verbal briefings, and rough product directions from our CEO, CTO, and Product team and turn them into shipped, well‑engineered features and systems on our Cloudflare‑based platform. You'll scaffold the plan, drive the work to completion, and rigorously review what AI produces along the way. In effect, you'll be delivering the output of a small engineering team — AI gives you the velocity to make that possible, and your judgement keeps the quality bar where it needs to be.
This is a senior individual contributor role rather than a people‑leadership role. You'll report to our Head of Product and work closely day‑to‑day with our CEO and CTO, both of whom are deeply technical and actively involved in what gets built.
Your work will help improve educational outcomes for teachers and students across the globe. Talk about making a positive impact!
A day in the life of a Software Engineer at Intellischool
As a startup, our jobs are widely varied - there's nothing "normal" about any given week at Intellischool! However, here are some of the things you would be working on regularly:
* On‑the‑tools delivery (65%) — translating briefs into shipped features: scaffolding plans, executing the work using AI‑assisted development tools, critically reviewing what the AI produces, and shipping production‑quality code to our Cloudflare platform;
* Agent and automation engineering (20%) — designing and building agent workflows and automations that reduce the amount of manual human work required to run the Intellischool platform;
* Technical collaboration (15%) — working alongside our CEO, CTO and Head of Product to pressure‑test ideas, contribute to architecture and platform decisions, and exemplify the engineering standards we hold across the business.
What you'll need for success
* Demonstrable senior‑level software engineering experience, with a track record of taking ambiguous product ideas through to shipped production systems with minimal supervision
* Deep fluency with AI‑assisted development tools (agentic coding environments, autonomous code generation, AI‑driven refactoring) — you already deliver with AI as a core part of your daily workflow, not as a novelty
* A demonstrably critical eye for AI output: you can quickly tell when generated code is wrong, brittle, hallucinated, or sub‑optimal, and you don't ship it until it's right
* Strong hands‑on experience with the Cloudflare developer platform — Workers, Durable Objects, Workflows, Containers, D1, R2, Queues, KV, and related primitives — and a genuine understanding of when and how to use each
* Expert TypeScript, with the kind of fluency that comes from years of shipping production systems rather than prototypes
* Experience designing and building agent workflows or AI‑driven automations that have replaced meaningful chunks of manual work — not toy demos
* A passion for clean, performant, readable and secure code that is easily understood by other team members
* The ability to take a verbal brief, ask the right questions, scaffold an execution plan, and run with it independently
* A strong understanding of SQL and data modelling — our platform is data‑heavy and your work will regularly intersect with our data warehouse and customer data
* An understanding of the full development life cycle of applications throughout analysis, design, implementation, testing and deployment
* Experience working in an agile environment
* Excellent written and verbal communication in English — you can defend your technical decisions on merit, document your work clearly, and disagree productively with strong technical peers
* A self‑directed working style: you set your own pace, identify what needs doing, and upscale appropriately rather than wait to be told
* Bonus points for experience in dev‑ops and automation using GitHub Actions, Bitbucket Pipelines, or similar
* Bonus points for previous EdTech or analytics product experience
How we work, and what to expect
You’ll be joining a small team of deeply technical operators. The team holds a high bar for technical reasoning, code quality and intellectual honesty — we expect engineers to defend their decisions on technical merit, raise their hand when they're unsure rather than persevere on a wrong path, and care visibly about the quality of what we ship.
We're direct with each other. We don't pad feedback, we don't tolerate mediocre output dressed up as "done", and we don't accept AI‑generated work that hasn't been thought about. The flip side is that good thinking gets heard, good work gets shipped fast, and the people doing it get serious autonomy.
If that sounds like the environment you want, we'd love to hear from you.
