Product Development Role

MCi Carbon is a global clean tech company that aims to shape the new circular economy by reimaging carbon.

The company has a long history of service excellence and industry engagement, delivering services to customers in Australia and overseas since 1969.

MCi Carbon has been working with the University of Newcastle on research and scale-up of mineral carbonation technology for over 11 years.

A pilot plant facility has been built and is in operation at the Newcastle Institute of Energy and Resources (NIER).

This Product Development Engineer role requires researching, developing, and optimising materials—particularly supplementary cementitious materials for cement and concrete applications and carbonates for industrial applications —supporting MCi Carbon's projects and sustainability objectives.

The ideal candidate will have experience in materials characterisation, product development, and lab-based research.

They must be proficient in analytical techniques and data interpretation, with strong problem-solving, analytical, and project management skills.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required, including technical reporting and presentations.

The successful candidate will also be proactive in WHS and safety protocols and able to work independently and collaboratively in cross-functional teams.

Key Responsibilities

1. Research and develop innovative supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and carbonates to support MCI Carbon's sustainability goals
2. Design and conduct laboratory experiments to evaluate material performance under various conditions
3. Characterise raw materials and SCMs using advanced analytical techniques (e.g. XRD, XRF, SEM-EDS, BET, TGA/DSC, particle size analysis)
4. Assess pozzolanic reactivity, hydraulic behaviour, and compatibility with cementitious systems
5. Analyse data, prepare technical reports, and provide evidence-based recommendations
6. Advise project teams on material selection and application to optimise outcomes
7. Maintain accurate records in line with data security protocols
8. Ensure compliance with WHS legislation and internal safety standards
9. Mentor junior staff and contribute to a collaborative, safety-focused research environment
10. Stay current with industry developments and uphold strict confidentiality of proprietary information
